Saints at Cairns Art Gallery

By Mrs Shauna McGovern

Art students from Years 9, 10 and 12 recently attended Cairns Art Gallery to view the Andy Warhol/Roy Lichtenstein exhibition. A first for the Cairns region, the exhibition contains iconic prints from two American pioneers of the Pop Art movement. Cairns Art Gallery has partnered with the National Gallery of Australia. The exhibition includes major prints on loan from the National Gallery of Australia, including works from Warhol’s famous Campbell’s Soup II 1969 series.

Students were equally impressed with the other exhibitions on show, featuring the works of local and international photographers such as Naomi Hobson and Martine Gutierrez and Etty Bay textile artist Francesca Rosa.

Exposing students to both local and international artists working across a variety of media types and forms is invaluable to students’ art education. It takes learning out of the classroom and into the gallery setting.

Saints Students Get Creative with Clay

Our Year 7 visual artists have successfully finished their rotation during which they designed and created a host of ceramic camp dogs inspired by the work of Arnhem Land artist Lena Yarinkura.
