Friends of the Arts
In conjunction with the Arts Department, we have formed a support committee for music and the arts. With so many things happening in these areas, we need a little help. We had a great group of parents attend a recent meeting (with wine and cheese) and volunteer to assist us where needed. We have some upcoming events that we may need some help with. We already have the Saints Unplugged evenings covered, but will need some help to move the Music Department from one side of the College to the other. More information coming on that soon.
Mother's Day Assembly
Last week, our Combined Saints Colleges String Ensemble performed at the Mother’s Day Assembly. There were manymissing on camps etc., but they played a great piece called Little Blue Train which was composed originally for the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra. Their performance had some pizzazz and style. Congratulations to all involved.
Music Extension Concert
Last Wednesday, Mathew Christensen (Year 12) performed in his second Music Extension Concert for the year at St Monica’s Cathedral. He played El Condor Pasa on the trumpet and his performance was magnificent. There were other high-quality performances during the evening and we thank St Monica’s College and, in particular, Jo Langtree for looking after our MEXS students.
Saints Unplugged Junior (Years 7-9) will be held on Wednesday 24 May in McLaughlin Theatre at 6pm. The Senior Unplugged (Years 10-12) will be on the following evening – Thursday 25 May at the same venue. If your son is interested in performing on one of these evenings, they need to contact me at cspannenbu@cns.catholic.edu.au as soon as possible.
Our wonderful Hospitality students will provide light meals and beverages (wine and soft drink) from 5:30pm. A gold coin donation will secure your entry. Please come along and see what our students have been working on for the past term.
Clashes with Instrumental Music Lessons and Assessment
This term, as with every term, there will be clashes with lessons and assessments. Assessment always takes precedence. To minimise the disruption to the visiting teachers (who are only here one day per week), students need to write their lessons into their diaries when they receive their timetables. Yes, the whole term’s worth. They receive these timetables at the beginning of the term. When the Assessment and Excursion calendar is released (usually around Week 2/3), they should be writing their assessment/excursions into their diaries. At this point, they can foresee any clashes with assessment and that is the time to be contacting their IM teachers to change the time of their lessons.
It is rarely possible to accommodate lesson time changes with 24 hours notice or less. Remember that most of our teachers have full day timetables and limited ability to change things around because it means changing around other students on that day as well.
Spirit of Arts Awards
All students who participate in Music, Drama, Visual Art and Film Television and New Media are eligible to apply for an award. Handbooks and journals are available from the staffroom and we encourage everyone to participate in the scheme.
For any questions regarding the Spirit of Arts Awards not outlined in the journal, please contact me at cspannenbu@cns.catholic.edu.au.
