Term 2, 2023 Specialist Curriculum Overviews
Our Specialist programs will cover the following during Term Two:
Physical Education
“Every child is a winner, when they try their very best”
Prep: We have come a long way from short 20 minute classes to having the ability to concentrate and participate in 60 minute classes by the end of last term. At the beginning of the term the students will focus on throwing and catching. We will focus on techniques and then participate in many circuits and activities that will practise these skills. We will learn and practice skills with a skipping rope and finish off this short term with some cooperative games focus. Throughout the term we will continue to work on demonstrating safe behaviours by following instructions and taking turns.
Year 1 / 2: We will continue to refine our fundamental skills this term. Focus will be on throwing and catching, bouncing and punting (with an opportunity for the students to participate in an AFL clinic). These skills will be practised during various rotations and modified games. We will continue to work on participating in games by following rules and using equipment and space safely
Year 3: We start the term off with Cross Country Trials. The District Cross Country is scheduled for the 19th May (Week 4). At the beginning of our sessions, during the first four weeks, we will continue to participate in fitness drills before moving into the main focus which will be developing the students' invasion game skills. Invasion sports involve an offensive team working to maintain possession of an object while attacking (or invading) a defensive team's goal or target area. Development of specific skills and skill combinations that involve passing, receiving, shooting and defending will be our focus. We will learn some new games/sports so we can practise these skills in a fun environment. We will also continue to work on working cooperatively in a team and applying rules fairly.
Year 4: The first 5-6 weeks of term will focus on sport specific skills required for games we will participate in for the Winter Gala Day, scheduled for Tuesday 6th June. For this day the students will be given the opportunity to participate in T-ball, Netball, AFL and European Handball. In PE we will focus on just two of these sports, Netball and European Handball which ties in well with our invasion sport theme for the term.
Students that have made our Cross Country will have the opportunity to participate in the District Cross Country event. scheduled for the 19th May (week 4). In the first weeks of term, we will continue to participate in fitness drills as part of our warm up and discuss our understanding of what it is to be fit and physically active and perhaps what we can do to consistently be fit and active on a weekly basis. We will finish off the final weeks playing a new invasion sport so students can continue to work on creating scoring opportunities and maintaining possession of the ball. We will also continue to develop their skills to work cooperatively in a team and apply rules fairly.
Year 5 / 6: We start the term off continuing our unit on skill and health related components. We will apply this to a number scenarios, first up, fitness testing then talk about them and run activities in conjunction with the sport specific skills we will be doing throughout the term.

This term we also prepare the students for the Winter Gala Day scheduled for Thursday 15th June. We will finish off the term with some more fitness based sessions, particularly boxing to work further on many of the fitness components we have learnt about this term. Visual Arts
Year Six:
The Year Six students will begin the term with a focus on Graeme Base Books. They will create artwork inspired by what they have viewed. In this art piece students will draw all things related to them. The final piece of artwork the Year Six students will make is a keepsake canvas bag using imprinting.
Year Five:
The Year Five students will begin the term with a focus on Indigenous art. They will create artwork inspired by this artwork. Students will look at landscapes and silhouettes from all around the world. They will create a landscape of their choice using three colours blended together. The students will create a 3D mask artwork inspired by Kimmy Cantrell.
Year Four:
The Year Four students will be creating artwork inspired by op art. They will also be using watercolour to create a mountain artwork. Finally, students will create puppets of the characters from their favourite story book.
Year Three:
The Year Three students will be creating an artwork inspired by Bronwyn Bancroft a famous Indigenous artist. Students will look at her animal work in particular. They will create silhouette artwork from different inspirational quotes. Students will also decorate a door sign for their bedrooms.
Auslan

Welcome to Term 2 in Auslan. Hopefully you are all feeling refreshed after our two-week Easter break. What a positive start we had in Term 1 Auslan, with most students increasing their fingerspelling speed! In all our Auslan classes this term, students will continue to grow their Auslan vocabulary and receptive skills through the use of live demonstration, peer interactions, targeted vocabulary and language structures, pictorial responses and signed activities.
Preps will continue their Auslan journey by mastering the fingerspelled alphabet and learning to introduce themselves. Their focus will remain on signs associated with ‘self’, and learning to express their own preferences in sign language. This term they will have the opportunity to learn new signed vocabulary including colours and numbers through guided group activities, repeated language structures and games.
Year 1 and 2 will continue to consolidate their existing Auslan vocabulary through signing colours, letters, numbers, body and everyday signs. This term they will extend their vocabulary to include signs related to additional feelings, clothing and basic community signs, and will develop their signed presentation skills.
We will continue to use consistent vocabulary themes between year levels wherever possible to encourage signed communication between siblings and friends. Therefore,
Year 3 – 6 will also focus on language associated with feelings and clothing - and extend into occupation and community related signs. They will continue to consolidate their communication skills, use of common signs, expression of opinion and their ability to respond to voiceless questions.
The conclusion of the semester is always a treat, viewing each student presenting to their classmates without voice and showcasing their signing growth!
Performing Arts
In Term Two we will have a major focus on music, bringing in elements of drama and dance where appropriate. All classes will spend time throughout the term listening to, describing and giving their opinions on various pieces of music.
Prep - Preps will begin with exploring sound, in particular looking at high/low, fast/slow, soft/loud and short/long sounds. We will use body percussion and untuned percussion instruments to experiment with making sounds, and explore graphical notation as a way of recording and reading music. Later in the term we will learn about beat and rhythm.
Year 1 - Year Ones will build on their musical knowledge from last year, and further explore pitch and dynamics. Students will create their own graphical scores, and then perform these in small groups. We will again focus on beat and rhythm, and students will work on reading and clapping some simple rhythms using traditional notation.
Year 2 - Year Twos will begin with revision of reading and clapping simple rhythms, and will then create, record and perform their own rhythm using body percussion. We will then use the Boomwhackers and xylophones to explore rhythm and melody. Later in the term students will create soundscapes, and then perform these in small groups.
STEMMS
The students made a great start to STEMMS in Term 1.
Prep- This term the students will begin to access the school network and start using Google Chrome and various websites on the internet. They will also be introduced to coding through the use of the Bluebot robots.
Year 1- This term the students will build on their knowledge in the use of Google Chrome and develop their skills using Google Docs. They will extend their coding skills using the robots BlueBots.
Year 2 - This term the students will be using the robots Dash and Dot. They will explore the coding required for these robots and discover terms such as sequences and loops. They will look at how sequencing affects the outcome of a robot's movements.
Year 3 - Students will be using the robots Spheros this term. They will look at free driving the Spheros to control them and then look at being able to code the robot to make similar moves. They will need to look at variables such as speed, direction, time and distance to successfully code a Sphero through various obstacles and courses.
Year 4 - Students will be using the robots Ozobots. They will be using colour markers to code the Ozobots through various moves and functions. They will create their own courses for the Ozobots to manoeuvre through. They will also use block coding to have the Ozobots perform similar functions.
Year 5- Year 5 students will be using Spheros this term. They have previously used them in Year 3 and will now build on their knowledge to code the Spheros to perform various functions, loops and sequences. The students will work through various modules to have the Spheros act as a Magic Ball, Swimmer, Sumo Wrestler and Race Car.
Year 6 - The students this term will be looking at the online platform Tinkercad, whereby they will design, develop and build their own 3D model. They will also use this model to do a 3D print. Following this the students will be using the robot kits Lego Mindstorm. These kits enable students to build, design, test, code and run their robots to perform a variety of functions. Students will explore the basics of the kit before deciding on what they would like to design and build and for what purpose and function these robots could be used for.
