Mr Will Saunders - Learning Specialist Mathematics & PLC Link Leader

In recent weeks, the 3/4 team and I have been collaborating and learning with our consultant Kathy Palmer. We have participated in sessions guided by Kathy Palmer's expertise to enhance our teaching practices and engage students. Through observations of Kathy's lessons and involvement in lesson study, we have expanded our knowledge, skills, and instructional methods.

Observing Kathy's lessons has provided us with insights into effective teaching techniques. We have used the lesson study structure to enable us to grow and learn together. This collaborative process helps us refine lesson plans, teaching approaches, and evaluation methods, fostering deep conceptual understanding and student participation. We have also analysed student work samples to gain insights into their thinking processes and address misconceptions, providing targeted support based on individual needs.

One of the key insights we gained during this process was the significance of the equals sign in mathematics education. Through the lesson study we experienced how essential it is for students to have a deep understanding that the equals sign represents balance in an equation, rather than a mere indicator of where the answer should be written. To help our students grasp this concept, we have incorporated various engaging and experiential learning opportunities. Through these efforts, we are empowering our students to develop strong foundational mathematical reasoning skills and problem-solving abilities.

As the Maths Leader, I take pride in the dedication and commitment displayed by our teacher team throughout this journey. Their pursuit of professional growth and student success reflects their expertise and passion.

I encourage you to discuss Addition and Subtraction with your child, strengthening the bond between home and school. Your involvement reinforces their understanding and contributes to a comprehensive learning environment.
