Debating Term 1 Update

Round 1

On Wednesday 1 March, we had five teams participate in the first round of Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) Schools Debating Competition. There was a great turn out on the night and I’d like to thank all the debating coaches and parents for joining us to cheer on the girls. Our teams performed fantastically, starting our year off with three first round wins!

I was lucky enough to watch the C and D Grade Debaters, their topics were as follows: “That compulsory voting should be abolished in Australia” and “It should be compulsory for students to participate in extracurricular activities.” Throughout the night, our teams displayed a high level of teamwork and collaboration, readily sharing their ideas for rebuttals and words of encouragement before each speech. Both teams I watched came out on top, winning their debate. A special mention to Linda Y. and Chinthhya S. for winning best speaker!

I’d like to congratulate all our debaters for putting in the effort during lunch times and after school hours; you all spoke with poise. Further, I’d like to thank our amazing new Debating Coordinator, Ms Park, she has done so much work behind the scenes, enriching us with her debating knowledge and preparing our teams for each topic.

Round 2

Round 2 provided Shelford’s debaters with new challenges. Our teams faced complex debates about political donations, compulsory volunteering, and uranium mining. All students worked hard to prepare and understand the nuance of these issues. The proceeding debates were of a very high standard, and it was a valuable experience that helped hone the skills of our teams. Having made it through such a difficult round, the Year 10s and 11s are eagerly anticipating the next challenge of secret topic debates next term.

Thank you to all coaches and parents for your support of our teams. Well done to all our debaters for your dedication and perseverance.
