Student agency and engagement in Year 1

At the beginning of this term, our Year 1 students started engaging with our "Kobuta and friends" unit. In this unit, students will learn to read, write and say the different animals introduced in this unit. Students have been singing our 'kobuta' song with passion. They've also been playing different games to consolidate their understanding of the animal vocabulary in Japanese. Lastly, they have started to learn how to read and recognise some hiragana characters in some of the animal words.

Year 2

Our Year 2 students have had an exciting start to Japanese this term. They have been working hard to learn the vocabulary for family members in Japanese. As a part of their learning, they've learned to sing the family song accompanied by actions and gestures for each family member to support their understanding of the words. The students have explored various mnemonics (memory trigger stories) to help recall the pronunciation and reading of the new vocabulary from this unit

Year 3 and 4

The Year 3 and 4 students have spent the first three weeks of Term 2 challenging themselves to read in Japanese. They learned some mnemonics (memory trigger stories) to assist with their reading and understanding of colour words in Japanese. They had fun playing different games and using different methods to show their learning and understanding.

Year 5 and 6

In preparation for our first online exchange with our Sister School in Japan, students in Year 5 and 6 are practising how to introduce themselves in Japanese. They have been focusing on introducing basic information such as name and age, before moving onto hobbies in the coming weeks. This has been a fantastic opportunity to help students review concepts they have previously learned as well as challenge and extend their learning.
