WORK EXPERIENCE: RMIT WomenG Project

Throughout the week of 27-31 March as part of the RMIT WomenG Project, I had the privilege to be immersed in the world of engineering, particularly focused on infrastructure and the various roles and sectors this field can take you. We visited various destinations including the Rail Academy in Newport where we were exposed to the site and were able to design our very own station incorporating sustainability factors and influences that it would have on surrounding residents and societies. This followed with our visit to the Metro Tunnels HQ and we were informed of the new project including 5 new stations, high capacity trains and new and improved safety measures. To continue, we travelled to Somerton to visit the company Downer and were given an onsite tour of the facilities, plant, and laboratory. We learned about how they built their roads with bitumen and asphalt, as well as their involvement in the F1 race track. We were also given the opportunity to visit their Collins Street office and witness what it's like to work in an office as opposed to on-site. This day also included presentations and discussions with experienced and knowledgeable engineers and others working in the sector about their positions at Downer and in the industry. Finally, our last day consisted of attending Fulton Hogan’s office and having a range of individuals speak to us about their positions within the construction company and alliance. Ultimately, this was an incredible experience to get to know about engineering and the different avenues it can take you to!
