From the High Ability Program
Last Tuesday, some students did a writing program with Australian author Jacqueline Harvey. During the program, she showed us some photos that she had taken. Most of the pictures were of a boat that she went on, but some were of a helicopter. The task was to write the most exciting scene you could, inspired by the pictures on the screen. It had to be an adventure story. The pictures encouraged us to use our imagination and write creatively. I wrote a story about some people on a boat when suddenly a masked man appears out of nowhere and…

My writing course experience was amazing. Not only was it all day feedback and help, it was with a fantastic writer: Jacqueline Harvey! This experience helped me improve my writing so much. With feedback from an actual author, it was really good help for my writing. Some of my favourite things were probably: Show don’t tell, Creating a character and Creating scenes of stories. I would definitely recommend this experience for all schools. I was so lucky to take this course, it made me think of so many new, creative ideas! 😄

I liked the discussion and sharing. Jacqueline told us funny and amusing stories, read chapters or passages of her books and showed us how to improve our writing. I had lots of fun and learnt some handy tips.

On Tuesday, we did a writers workshop. We met Jacqueline Harvey, a children's author, and spent the day learning about how to improve our writing. My favourite part was writing a scary story and learning new interesting stuff. For example, we had to use the ‘Show don’t Tell’ to explain something. It was a fun activity, and we all enjoyed it because we got to learn more about each other and the author.

On Tuesday, we had a writing workshop with the author Jacqueline Harvey. She was very nice and told us some great stories that really did happen to her. She got us to write two narratives; one that had to include the character we made a character description for, and the other had to be scary, set on a boat and in a remote place. We also did some small exercises to practise things like “ Show, don’t tell”. I really enjoyed it because it was a fun way to write, and we learned new skills and tips to improve our writing, like how it isn’t good to have too many adjectives.

“When I went with Jacqueline Harvey, I made one idea into lots of idea’s. I also wrote a story, so basically, I made one idea into a whole story with Jacqueline Harvey.”

“When Jacqueline Harvey went to our school, we did a 3-page assignment. We also wrote a story. We also wrote the most surprising thing on the way to school. We also wrote why a snake would be in my bedroom. We also wrote the worst Christmas present we could get.” – Khanh Duong, 1/2C
My name is Aaron and we are working on a special writing program. We did activities to improve on writing with Jacqueline Harvey. First we introduced ourselves and Jacqueline. After we did that, we were brainstorming for ideas for a story, also it could be made up. Then we were going to write a story but before that there was a prompt and we made up the rest of the story. Last we wrote a story about a person stuffing a frog in a bottle and tiptoeing downstairs then continued on and I felt great”.

From the digitech classes
Term 1 Digital Technologies in Grade 3/4
This term in Digital Technologies, we worked on an online digital book using Book Creator with Miss Spencer. It was really fun because we learnt a lot of information about how to be responsible online and we also played a game called Google Interland. The steps were to play one level of the game every second week and when we found a little bit of information, we made notes on a slide that Miss Spencer made and then the following week we would write complete paragraphs about that topic. We had to think about design elements when creating our book online.
