YEAR 11 POLITICS AND LAW EXCURSION
On Tuesday 21 March (Week 8), the Year 11 Politics and Law class attended an excursion to the courts and Parliament House.
The morning began at an open court activity in the Supreme Court, where we saw the sentencing of an individual who plead guilty in a District Court matter and heard many lower level issues in the Magistrates Court. One of the highlights was the examination in chief and cross examination of a key witness who had been the skipper of a boat that was intercepted off Geraldton in 2016 - one of the biggest drug smuggling operations in Australia (a 1.2 tonne drug bust worth 1 billion dollars).
We spent the afternoon at Parliament House and stayed for question time. The Year 11s found it interesting that there were so many questions from the opposition during question time about The Perth Mint.
Below are comments from some of the students who attended:
"I enjoyed seeing the real life version of the courts and parliament" - Jack Georgiu (Hannan)
"It was different to what I was expecting. It was way more interesting in the courts than I expected. Question time in Parliament was very informal and fun to watch, especially with members on Facebook all goading each other." - Grace Kane (Trinity)
"It was interesting seeing well known cases in person that we have seen on the news." - Ella Davies (Normandy)
