Grade 5 Excursion

“On Tuesday 25th of October, some year 5 students were chosen to go to a special day at Bundoora Park. This was an opportunity us students to learn about more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, about their culture and their rights. When we got to school we walked to the high street to catch the tram. It took around 45 minutes when we got there. There was a tour guide who worked there holding a sign that said our school's name on it to guide us to Bundoora Park.

This day was put together through the City of Darebin and called ‘Yarning Circle’. It was attended by a few primary schools from within the Darebin area, one of which was us from Northcote Primary School. There were two assemblies throughout the day, one when we arrived and one when we just finished lunch! There were many activities in the day that we participated in such as a traditional smoking ceremony, the ‘Little’ Long Walk, traditional Indigenous sports and much more! There was an activity where students got interviewed on the first ever Indigenous radio station called 3KND! This was an activity that NPS took part in, and we all had a lot of fun with this.

This day was very special and we are very grateful that we got to learn all about Aboriginal people and their culture”
