On Saturday 26th November 2022, Glen Eira College will again be a polling place at the State Election.

Your GECPA will be running a sausage sizzle and cake stall. With the crowds that Election Day draws, this is an invaluable opportunity to raise much needed funds that we propose goes towards more undercover seating for students. Plus, it’s an opportunity for everyone to come together and show off our wonderful College community.

BUT…we need your help!

Volunteer to help on the BBQ and cake stall, set up or pack up.
Bake for our cake stall.
Donate money to our BBQ Supplies Fund.
Support our stalls and encourage your family & friends to support us.

Our BBQ STALL will be open from 8am – 2pm. We will be serving sausages, soft drinks and more. Vegetarian options are also available.

Our CAKE STALL will also be open from 8am – 2pm. We will be selling the delicious items made by our college community. We need cakes, cupcakes, muffins, slices, coconut ice, but please - no cream or custard. Jam, home-grown or preserved lemons are also welcome! Easy recipe ideas to get you started can be found here . As a condition of our health permit please label everything clearly (on your items’ label list ALL ingredients, your first name and last name initial and the date you made it– and complete the donations list for the GECPA stall info - including the item, your full name and phone number). Small Christmas crafts also welcome.

MONETARY DONATIONS If you can’t help out on the day, you can still help by making a monetary donation to our BBQ supplies fund. Donations will go towards purchasing the soft drinks, sausages, onions, bread, condiments and more. Please hand in donations to the College Office.

GECPA Committee Roles

We are looking for volunteers for various roles and/or short-term assignments, such as the coordination of the November election stall. Please if you can help: gecpa@gec.vic.edu.au. More descriptions on roles and responsibilities in the next mailchimp.

Working Bees: Our next Working Bee will be on Sunday 20 November

Meet on Booran Road near the entrance to the College. We need volunteers to do things like sweep leaves and pick up litter, mulching and strengthen the fencing on recent garden plantings.

New Undercover seating for Students

Your GECPA has recently ordered almost 30m of new seating which will be installed over the summer break. The bench seats will be undercover near the canteen and gym to provide more seating during periods of heavy rain, which we are experiencing more often.

By purchasing this seating from REPLAS, GEC is helping to consume plastic materials collected for recycling through Coles and Woolworths supermarkets. An added bonus is that they do not rot and do not need painting.

Second Hand Uniforms

The uniform sale will be on Tuesday 13th December at 3pm-4pm in PAC, the Year 7 2023 student orientation day.

Please donate your unwanted uniform items to the office as a donation to the school - families will not receive any payment for their items. Please ensure that all items are in reasonable condition and have been washed and dried before you bring them in. Please note that we cannot sell items that are no longer part of the college uniform, such as polar fleece jackets or the older-style all grey sports tops (sports tops in the current style - with red sleeves- are very welcome).

Year 11 and 12 Maths - Scientific Calculators Collection

Are your students finishing with a scientific calculator at the end of the year and would like to donate it to the school? Please leave any spare scientific calculators at the school office after VCE exams so the Wellbeing Coordinator can distribute to needy students. Please don’t let your students throw them in the bin as they are expensive and valuable for other students!

The new Australian Curriculum: responding to a changing world – Monash University

The Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 (ACARA, 2022) was launched in May 2022, after a time of rapid societal alteration including the pandemic, climate change and other unprecedented global events.

Version 9 of the curriculum is rolling out at a time when young people across the world are filled with uncertainty, fear and worry. The 2021 Mission Australia survey of young people identified the effects of COVID-19 as their most pressing issue, followed by the environment, and equity and discrimination (Tiller et al., 2021).

In celebration of Social Inclusion Week, join our panel of educational experts as they share their varying perspectives in considering some of the key challenges facing contemporary society and young people, and how a national curriculum could or should respond to these. They will debate the Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 in the context of advancing First Nations education, sustainability and climate change, young people’s health and wellbeing, and inclusion and social justice.

Innovative approaches to supporting the wellbeing of young people

A core component of Victoria’s vision as the Education State is significant improvement in outcomes for children and young people of all ages and abilities. This significant improvement is focused on both excellence and equity in learner outcomes in the areas of achievement, engagement and wellbeing. To achieve these outcomes, there is a need to integrate the focal areas of academic outcomes, behavioural needs, and social and emotional health within a unified framework in schools and early childhood settings. Integrating these focal areas into a unified framework may improve:

the implementation of practices easier, more efficient, and more cost-effective
protection against the abandonment of evidence-based practices in one area (for example, in the area of behaviour support) due to multiple competing priorities within an education setting
wellbeing for educators and school leaders and prevent educators from viewing the implementation of programs and practices to improve academic achievement, behaviour and wellbeing as separate initiatives.

Join our panel of researchers from different disciplines within the School of Educational Psychology and Counselling as they describe ways to use high-impact educational methods and behaviour support practices in integrated, inclusive, and strengths-based ways to support the achievement, engagement and wellbeing of all children and young people.
