Three Kurunjang Secondary College students of African backgrounds, one teacher and MEAS participated in a Youth Forum held On October 19, 2022, at the University of Melbourne. The Forum with school students, teachers and academics, looked at school discipline and exclusion. Term IV Pacific Language Weeks.

Bula Vinaka! Fijian Language Week (2 – 8 Oct)

Theme for this year is Me vakabulabulataki, vakamareqeti, ka vakaqaqacotaki na vosa vakaviti, which means nurture, preserve and sustain the Fijian language. During this week our students were able to enjoy a traditional Fijian Chicken Curry Roti, during their Breakfast Club. At Lunchtime in the Library, students and even staff were tested with their General Knowledge about Fiji. We even sent students on a scavenger hunt in the Library, which earnt them a little treat if they were able to complete the task in a timely manner. Its great to see our school community embrace the diverse cultures.

Malo ni! Tokelau Language Week (23 – 29 Oct)

This years theme for Tokelau Language Week (Te Vaiaho o te Gagana Tokelau) is Halahala ki vavau, kae ke mau ki pale o Tokelau, which means ‘To plan for the future is to understand the past. We started the week, with  funafuna donuts for Breakfast Club. On Tuesday we had our very own ‘Amazing Race’ which consisted of 6 Challenges for the students. This Race incorporated learning about the Tokelau language along the way, with a Memory Challenge, Body Challenge, Numbers Challenge, Colours Challenge and we even had a few fun ones in there. I was told that the Weetbix Whistle challenge was the hardest.

This was our last Language Week for the Year and I would like to Thank everyone that participated in the various activities and events. I hope you have gained some insight on the small Islands from the Pacific and their Languages. I know one aspect of these Programs that I have thoroughly enjoyed, was sharing and showcasing our Pacific Island Food.
