Year 1 Unit

Over the last few weeks, the year one students have been busy designing and constructing a range of puppets in the classroom.

Our science and inquiry topic ‘Lights, Camera, Action!’, has inspired the students to use their scientific understandings about how light travels, to design shadow puppets. Students designed these puppets using the idea of the silhouette and used cut outs and cellophane to add detail to their fabulous designs. Students also explored adding movable parts to their shadow puppets, so when they performed their puppet shows, their puppets came to life!

Here are some of the shadow puppets the creative students in JU5 made this week! They followed the design process of ‘Imagining – planning – creating – experimenting – improving’.

In JU4 and JU6, students also used the design process to make their own marionette puppets. There are many moving parts involved in making a marionette puppet, and we were very impressed at how well students tried lots of different construction techniques using their problem-solving skills.

Here are the students having lots of fun performing with their marionette puppets.
