Visual Arts

Last Friday evening, the Year 10 Art Exhibition was launched at an opening event in the Art Room. Artists Jessica Bloor, Aurelia Albertini, Sami Kent, Ruby Williams, Remi Mansfielf, Scarlett Sassin, Kala Roberts, Nicola Newland and Ella Gowans each prepared an artist statement containing the intention of their work and details of their method and materials. The art on display was of an exceptional standard with the students’ increasing level of artistic maturity evident in all corners. Congratulations to all of the artists and a big thank you to our Art Teacher, Mrs Jenna Magnus, ably assisted by Mrs Sophie Newland. Please scroll through the above photo gallery to see their amazing pieces of art.

Also, last week, our Year 9/10 Music classes made their annual pilgrimage to Salamanca Square to perform on the bandstand for unsuspecting passers-by. The first group dodged the rain to entertain friends, family and strangers. All of the items were well prepared and well played. The second group headed down for the Year 10s final lesson and they all celebrated with some outstanding performances as well. Congratulations to all of the students involved for their music-making and generally great attitudes throughout both excursions.

And, on Tuesday, we held our first Music Ensembles Afternoon. This was an informal concert held up in the Hall where Fiddlesticks, Middle Years Voices, Ceilidh Band, Senior Singers and the College Orchestra all performed a piece that they’ve been working on this term. There was lots of good music and many smiles on young people’s faces. On the occasion of their final performance as a part of a Mount Carmel College ensemble, we also farewelled Aimee Stacey, Claudia Pollard, Jessica Bloor and Maggie Campbell, four Year 10 students who will be graduating next week. Congratulations to all of the students involved in the afternoon.

In the Drama Studio

Last Wednesday, the Year 9/10 Drama class performed a short play called "The Calendar Boys" to all Year 7 students. For the Year 10 students it was their final performance at Mount Carmel College, and capped off an excellent year for them all. The performance tied-in nicely with the work on script and characterisation that the Year 7 students have been completing in class. All Year 7 students were asked to write a review based on the performance, and some excerpts of these are below.

"The actors were clearly playing male characters, they made this clear by deepening their voices and splaying their bodies outwards. Asha Nicol (Eric) changed her walk, deepened her voice, and was the best at portraying a man. Overall I really enjoyed the play and would recommend it to others, I would rate it a nine out of ten." - Lily

"I thought the play was really enjoyable and it had a really good storyline. I was intrigued the entire way through and I thought it was really funny. There were a couple of minor things I could have changed but I think it was a really funny, enjoyable play. 4 ½ stars." - Miranda

"The person I thought adopted the male personality the best was Norm (Kala Roberts) because she was fully committed to the character and her voice and posture had changed." - Evie

"I give it a 5-star rating, I thought it was excellent." Amarli

"The play was a large success and it was executed perfectly. I would say that it was a 5 star 10/10 performance and it was really well done!" - Lucy

"One thing that was just really cool was when the phone rang. I honestly thought someone had actually rung it because it was so perfectly timed."- Emme

"Everyone on stage did such a great job it is so hard to only pick 3!" - Amy

Young Entrepreneurs

This term the Year 9/10 Legal Studies and Business elective class has been busy learning about the skills needed to run a business. After receiving some start-up funds, the students were challenged to design a product or service that they would then make, market and sell at school. The team that made the most profit would get to donate the profit of the entire class to a charity of their choice.

The students enthusiastically got to work thinking of business ideas. With lots of ideas floating around the room, four businesses were formed making beaded jewellery, candles and a thrift shop.

Alongside developing their skills, all of the groups made some profit with the students turning $425 in starting money into approximately $600. The Beaded Butterfly business made the most profit, turning a starting amount of $150 into $225. Despite 50% of new businesses closing within the first year, this business made a staggering 50 percent profit.

Well done to all the students for the effort they put in, as well as the staff that supported the initiative.

Human Library

In the Year 9/10 English Pathways elective class, students have been exploring human interest journalism. Students were tasked with choosing a person they know who they believe has an interesting story and then researching and interviewing them. Their work has been published on a Google site. There are certainly some amazing people in the wider College community, and students did an excellent job of researching, interviewing, writing/editing and publishing their stories.
