Around the Primary Campus

Prep

In Prep this semester we have been looking at different celebrations and commemorations around the world.  We discussed events such as birthdays, ANZAC Day, Halloween, Christmas and NAIDOC Week. We shared all the different and similar ways we celebrate and/or commemorate these events with our friends and families. Another festival we explored was the Diwali festival which is the festival of lights and marks the start of the Hindu New Year.  A member of our class shared her traditions for Diwali festival which included decorating her house with oil lamps called Diya’s. The class then enjoyed creating their own Diya lights to display in our classroom.

Year 1

The Year Ones have been actively involved in hands-on, shared experiences of comparing the external features of modern and prehistoric animals.  They visited Bonorong Park to observe Australian native animals in their habitats and feed the kangaroos. During a later Science session, Rose Darcey bought fern leaves into the classroom to provide the students with hands-on, shared experiences of the features of ferns and the environments in which this prehistoric food source could be found. They observed the features of a fern leaf, which remarkably, has changed little over time.

The class has also been busy learning about and creating 3D shapes in a variety of different mediums.

Year 2

This term the Year 2 students have studied places of historical significance in our local area, Hobart. We visited the Old Hobart Town Model Village at Richmond which showed the students visually what Hobart looked like over 100 years ago.  The students were fascinated to see the houses, buildings, waterfront and streets of Hobart then compared to now.

Years 3 and 4

Last week, in Years 3 & 4, Mitch joined us for our final Spirit of Jesus session for 2022. The Spirit of Jesus program supports students in developing a life long relationship with Jesus and His guiding principles. It encourages students to grow a meaningful relationship with the Catholic faith, as they recognise and identify the Gospel values within themselves and others.

This session entailed exploring the life lessons throughout the Spirit of Jesus program, including how we ‘greet, treat and speak’ to others, believing in ourselves, how we can give to others and having an attitude of gratitude.

Thanks Mitch for sharing the Spirit of Jesus with us!
