Primary News

Melanie Sluyters

You have possibly seen the footage on social media of a group of people watching a parade , mobile phone at the ready - filming it is their priority. Then the camera pans to  a woman leaning on the barricade, no phone in hand just in the moment, soaking up all that is before her.

It is the nature of today’s society that we have so many balls in the air that we really don’t always engage fully in what is going on around us. Our attention is divided between getting dinner ready, answering emails, folding the washing or flicking through our socials. But did we really listen to the person sharing the news of the day or take in nature's beauty as we walked the dog?

It seems strange that as we head towards the Christmas break, a time to celebrate with family and friends, the busyness has become all too consuming. We need to ask ourselves will the next four weeks evolve as a state of angst? Or do we take this next few weeks of 2022 and soak up what is important to us and celebrate the ‘Then and Now'?

Enjoy now, this moment…now is all there is.

Just Leadership Day

Last Tuesday a group of Year 5 students headed to St Aloysius to participate in CARITAS’ Just Leadership Day.  This was an opportunity for Year 5’s across southern Tasmanian to gather and discuss ways that they can promote being a leader in a just manner in future years and what they can do to support programs around service in 2023.  Below is a write up from one of the participants, Ruby Jager from Year 5 Navy.

“On Tuesday 15 of November, 10 year 5 students went to St Aloysius to meet up with Year 5 students from lots of other Catholic schools in Hobart for a day full of activities based around service leadership, the work of CARITAS Australia, Vinnies and Catholic Mission.

We were introduced to Mrs Prichard who works for CARITAS and she started the day off with an ice breaker. It was a “people bingo” to make us see that we are all really similar, no matter what school we go to. This made us all feel a bit more comfortable talking to students from other schools.

Other activities we did included:

  • A Kahoot
  • A CARITAS quiz
  • Learning about all the different charities
  • A Game of Life using paddle pop sticks

The last activity we did was coming up with ideas about how Mount Carmel primary school can fundraise for, and create awareness of, these charities in 2023. We had some great ideas but you'll have to wait until next year to find out what they are!

We all had a great day out and want to thank Ms Sluyters and Mrs Himson for taking us and helping us to think of ways we can help other people in our community”.

Welcome BBQ

Tonight we will gather as a Mount Carmel community to welcome new parents and students to the College.  This evening provided all with an opportunity to meet and chat in an informal setting, often allaying the nervousness before Step Up Day.

Step Up Day - Primary

On Monday 28 November all classes will get a taste of what it is like to be in the year group above as we celebrate our Step Up Day.  This day is an opportunity for students to meet their new teacher for 2023, as well as welcome into the fold new students who will join us.

The day is an opportunity to embrace so many new things and to remind ourselves how blessed we are as a community as we support each other and show how welcoming we are.

Celebrating The Nativity

Last week all parents from Kinder to Year 3 received information about ‘The Nativity’, which will be held on Tuesday 6 December at 6:00pm.

This evening is a chance to gather as an Early Years and Year 3 community and celebrate the birth of Jesus with a beautiful retelling of Matthew’s gospel.

At the conclusion of this, parents, Primary Staff and students can gather outside for a bite to eat and a chance to catch up with others.

A reminder to all Kinder - Year 3 parents to please check the information sent to you so that we can adequately cater for the evening.
