Tiddalik the Frog - Incursion

Throughout Term 4 Grade 1/2 students are exploring the integrated topic 'Through Generations - the importance of connections'. During this unit students have been investigating different types of family structures, places of cultural or spiritual importance, as well as the lives of people in the past. Four essential questions have guided student exploration:

  • How are families different?
  • Why are some places important to preserve?
  • How has life changed and stayed the same?
  • How can we use language to describe time and points of view?

As part of our study of the past, students participated in the Tiddalik Incursion, presented by the Drama Toolbox.

This incursion brought to life the Aboriginal Dream Time story of Tiddalick the Frog.

During this  incursion our students had the opportunity to become part of the story by taking on the role of local fauna; Emus, Frill Necked Lizards, Wombats, Koalas, Kangaroos, Cockatoos and Kookaburras.

Using performance, music and storytelling techniques we explored the importance of sharing water and resources and only taking from the land what we need.

The importance of 'being on country' for our First Peoples of Australia and the significance of over 60,000 years history of  culture, using places to pass on lessons through spoken creation stories has been a focus in our exploration of the past and ties in with our daily Grade 1/2 Acknowledgement of Country.

Following this incursion, students reflected on their experience:
  • Something I enjoyed was acting because it made me feel special and I loved listening to the story - Isla
  • Something I found interesting was being in the story - Wilson
  • Something I learnt was never be too greedy and always share things - Bridget
  • Something I enjoyed was making Tiddalik laugh - Isabella
  • Something I found interesting was the music and I enjoyed wearing the costumes - Jayden
  • Something I learnt is to be kind and respectful and imaginative - Sia
  • Something I enjoyed was becoming the wombat because it was a full-body costume and it was cute - Colin
Did you know each morning our Grade 1/2 students recite our shared Acknowledgement of Country?
