Year 7

Asphyxia

On the 24th of February, the Year Sevens had the pleasure of attending an incursion on journalism, by a woman called Asphyxia, who had a hearing disability. Asphyxia showed us her journals and taught us about the beauty of writing down our memories and feelings in a book.

Asphyxia hand made all her books with plain white paper, mixed with interesting coloured drawing paper or papers from places she has been. She not only makes books, she illustrates them with drawings and paintings she has created to express her feelings.

Asphyxia has been writing and creating journals since she was twelve, when her friend gave her a small writing book, which was soon to become the first of many. Asphyxia has inspired us to create our own journals and gave us ideas which have influenced the way we think and look at our diaries; not just as a boring book that we write stuff in, but a blank canvas, the start of something new, an artwork in the making.

Overall everyone immensely enjoyed the incursion and learnt a lot. We would like to thank all the teachers that organised this experience and of course Asphyxia for coming to Melbourne Girls College and sharing her journals with us.
