Secondary 7-8

Term 4
What a busy time of the year! All of our staff have been working very hard to complete assessments and students have been working very hard to achieve their SLP goals for this semester.
Our Integrated Unit – Heating and Melting - has seen students perform many exciting experiments with food and classes have been preparing for the Secondary 7-8 Food Festival which showcased a variety of items which have used heating or melting to produce. A few examples of these items are candles, nachos, chocolate and ice cream!
Students have also been busy rehearsing their Christmas Concert items which they are looking forward to performing for the school community on Monday 12th December.
SKH
SKH have been on an amazing ‘Learning Journey’ and have accomplished so much together this year. I believe that all students in SKH have had a wonderful year: working and learning together, performing, socialising, getting along and all working to achieve their personal best. I hope you are all very proud of everything your child has achieved this year. We were very successful at the Food Festival and thank everyone who attended and purchased our delicious lasagne and rocky road. We will enjoy spending our profits at Luna Park! I hope you enjoy your child’s PhotoStory (DVD) of their year in photos that will come home towards the end of the year. A huge thank you to all parents for working with me this year. I look forward to seeing you all at the Christmas Concert on Monday 12th December.
SSD
SSD have had a great year in their classroom in 2016. It’s been a busy term 4 organising our products for the Food Festival and finishing all our work in the classroom. Students have been busily calculating prices and learning how to make a profit. We have been working extremely hard to learn about advertising and how best to sell our products. Students came up with the idea of making short funny movies to keep people entertained on the night. We hoped you enjoyed our efforts. We have been talking in class about the upcoming year and all the students are looking forward to what 2017 has install for them, whether they are moving on to year 9 or becoming the leaders in our section the year 8’s. I want to thank my students for all their hard work this year and I hope they have learnt as much from me as I have learnt from them.
SEO
SEO have been really busy the last few weeks preparing for our Food Festival. Students have been ‘hands on’ planning, making and designing an array of activities. Students have been researching recipes and ideas, as a class we decided to make Candy Apples and Jumbo Mars Bar Crackles to sell on the night. We have started to design our display board that showcases students’ safety and advertising posters, procedural writing and some delicious pictures of our final products that the students had fun making. We are looking forward to the night and hope all our hard work is enjoyed by everyone.
SCS
SCS have been working super hard this term. We have made the Discovery Centre smell like Christmas Pudding, Salted Caramel and Black Tea and Lychee, which are the scents for our Wicked Wicks Candles that we are selling at the Food Festival. SCS Have also been rehearsing their Christmas Concert dance that they will be performing with SSD. This term has seen lots of dedication to Numeracy and SCS using many different mental strategies for addition and subtraction. We have also had fun with Volume and Capacity and revising time. Our Literacy classes joined and had a very spooky and enjoyable Halloween themed activity morning full of Pin the Wart on the Witch, Pumpkin Carving and Hanging Apple contest.
SSB
SSB are excited about the Food Festival on Tuesday the 22nd November. We have been busy taste testing products and working out the cost to enable us to make a profit. The gummi bear icy poles were a huge hit with the students as was the iced chocolate with ice cream. We have had lots of fun and authentic learning during this process.
SMP
This semester SMP have loved engaging in the Heating and Melting unit and completing lots of science experiments. We enjoyed making our products for the Food Festival and loved trial making and taste testing our Apple Crumble and Marshmallows. We also enjoyed other experiments like making ice cream in a bag. During the unit we have been able to incorporate our writing and maths learning as well making everything all tie together. We have been so busy it’s hard to believe the year is almost over. We have been practicing our dance for the Christmas Concert with SRM and SSB and are looking forward to our end of year celebration at Funfields.
SRM, SCA & SMC
A team, oh what it was. SRM, SCA and SMC have had a wonderful semester learning about Heating and Melting. We investigated types of energy and explore cause and effect of heat transfer. There were lots of hands on practical ways to examine heating and melting objects, including experiments with cooking, melting ice and safety in the kitchen. The highlight for this semester was Scienceworks, where they learnt about energy transfer in the lightning room and producing body heat in the sports exhibition..
