Humanities Week
Humanities Week
Last week, Staughton celebrated the Humanities subjects – Business and Economics, Legal Studies, History, Geography and French. There were heaps of fun activities for students and staff, including a 'Who Am I?' game in the bulletin each week. Congratulations to all winners for knowing their stuff!
Students saw Mr. Cork get arrested for pushing Humpty Dumpty on Tuesday, and then a mock court trial was held in the library to decide if he was innocent or guilty. Ms Sutherland presided over the court room as Judge Mother Goose, and our student leaders did an excellent job as attorneys Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum (Jessica Mitrevski and Skylah Ball), Kingsman (Oliver Mordaunt), Bailiff (Malou Lueth) and Wiley Wolf (Natalie Abela). After hearing all the evidence, the jury’s decision was unanimous and Mr. Cork was found guilty and charged! This gave students an insight into how a court room functions and the unjust legal system of fairytales.
On Wednesday, students were invited to explore History by creating medieval shields in the art room. There was loads of symbols and iconography used in medieval times to create meaning for the person wielding the shield, and students used these to design epic scenes and patterns on their own. It was also a big day for the Year 10 Business students who ran their Market Day stalls in the Multi. There were so many things to buy like bath bombs, candles, handmade bracelets, hot hands, cookies, and cupcakes. It was also really impressive to see how the students marketed their brands. All their hard work really paid off!
It was time for Geography on Thursday, where students ran through the courtyard at lunch to find clues and instructions for the Staughton Treasure Hunt. The winning team were the faster to find every clue and spell the word Geography at the end. In A6, students joined into teams to test their memories for some Flags of the World trivia. As Friday rolled around, students matched words to French recipes and watched Horrible Histories in the library at lunch.
It’s no wonder students pick Humanities in senior school! There’s so much to explore and enjoy. Thanks to all the Humanities teachers for running a great week of events and activities. Great job to our student leaders and all students who got involved!
If you won a Humanities competition last week, please see Ms. Boorman or Ms. Perkins for your prize.
