From the Principal Class Team

Year 12 Formal

The Year 12 Formal was held on Wednesday, 22 November at the Luxor Reception Centre in Taylors Lakes. Year 12 students celebrated the end of their secondary schooling in style. It was a pleasure seeing all the Year 12 students at their best.

All enjoyed a great three course meal. By the end of the evening all joined in the dancing. Students throughout the night used the photo booth to capture the evening with their friends in photos.

The behaviour of the students was exemplary and was a real credit to everyone. The class of 2018 did St Albans Secondary College proud.

Of course, no year 12 formal would be complete without a Queen and King for the night. Towards the end of the evening, the student leaders announced the Queen and King of the formal. These were:

  • Monica OKELLO
  • Andy NGUYEN

Congratulations to Monica and Andy. Congratulations to the Class of 2018.

Term 4 Progress Reports and Semester Reports

Term 4 Progress reports have now been completed for all Year 7 to 11 students. The timing of these reports depends on the timing of exams (for Year 10 & 11) and semester tests (for Year 9). They occurred as follows:

Year 11 Progress Reports were posted on Compass on 27 October

Year 10 Progress Reports were posted on Compass on 3 November

Year 7 – 9 Progress Reports were posted on Compass on 17 November

Please contact the school if you need assistance accessing reports on Compass via the Parent Portal.

Progress Reports provide an opportunity for students, parents and the school to see how each student is tracking in their work. Many students will be pleased with their progress at this point. We congratulate them on their effort and the high quality work that is being completed. A small proportion of students however, will need to improve their work or submit work that has not been completed. This will be their opportunity to do so before the end of semester reports are completed.

If you have any concerns about your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to contact their year level coordinator.

Orientation and step up Programs

Our Year 11 students have now finished their end of year exams and are in the middle of a two week Year 12 Orientation Program. Year 10 students will begin a one week Year 11 Orientation Program on 30 November.

The extensive orientation programs ensure that students are well prepared for the following year’s study. Students commence the course work and assessment for 2018 which gives them a head start and develops their confidence in coping with the pressure of the senior years of study.

Thank you to all our VCE and VCAL staff for their work on developing and conducting the rigorous orientation programs for our students.

Students in the lower levels of schooling will also be introduced to their subjects for 2018 through the Step Up Program. This will be held later in December.

Deloitte’s Volunteers gives our gardens a boost

On Friday, 17 November Deloittes, a large Australian accounting firm, provided the school with 10 Junior Executive volunteers to assist the Facilities Team with planting out the garden beds near our new Art room development.

On a warm day they were enthusiastic and very productive in finishing the planting of over 120 plants in just over 2 1/2 hours. They were an excellent group of young adults to work with and the end result is fantastic. We want to thank Deloittes sincerely for providing their staff as volunteers. Our school environment is greatly enhanced because of the work they have completed.

Thank you to our Facilities Team for making this all happen, ordering the plants, marking out the planting patterns and providing guidance with respect to the actual planting process.

Stay Safe on-line over the Term Break

Staying safe when you are using the internet is extremely important and even more so over the term break because statistics show that students use social media and other internet connections more during this time. This expanded use increases the risk of cyberbullying and identity theft to name just two concerns.

I encourage parents and guardians to check out the ‘Staying Safe on the Internet’ tips that can be found on our school’s website: http://stalbanssc.vic.edu.au/parents/safe-digital-device-use/

The specific information can be found under both the Student and Parent headings at the top of the page.

Please note that all social media applications have Privacy Settings which should be maintained in the on status at all times. Please talk to your children about being safe on-line – you don’t need to know how it works but you do need to know if they are experiencing any issues.

And finally....

Please take some time to look over the school calendar for important events coming up over the next few weeks, in particular Step Up and Accreditation Days.
