Implementation of new NSW Curriculum Syllabus for K-6 in 2019
Next year will see the implementation of the new mandatory NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Syllabus for Science and Technology. The new syllabus builds on the strengths of the existing NSW Science and Technology K–6 syllabus. The syllabus identifies the knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes that students are expected to develop in Science and Technology. The syllabus is designed to provide flexibility for teachers to develop their teaching and learning programs to meet the needs of their students.
• Science and Technology is one of the six key learning areas in the primary curriculum and consists of five strands.
• In Living World students learn about living things, the needs of living things and where food comes from.
• In Material World students explore the characteristics and properties of materials and substances.
• In Physical World students explore forces, energy and how the physical characteristics of objects affect movement.
• In Earth and Space they learn about the Earth’s place in the universe and about caring for the Earth’s resources.
• In Digital Technologies they investigate existing technologies and create digital solutions.
• Students develop an understanding of the five strands through two skill processes: Working Scientifically, and Design and Production. This enables students to answer questions and develop creative solutions to problems.
• Students learn about the influence and relevance of science and technology in their lives now and in the future.
The syllabus addresses important contemporary themes and general capabilities as students prepare to live and work successfully in the 21st century.

Revision - Making Connections and Summarising Comprehension Strategies.
Throughout Term 4, students across the K-6 learning spaces will be revising the Super Six Comprehension strategies. These strategies are constantly modelled, shared and guided with the students to support them in independently using these strategies to comprehend more difficult texts. Even as adults we use these strategies when reading, we just do not consciously think about it. Younger people need to be explicitly taught these strategies in order for them to progress.
Please find attached the activities that have been included on the newsletter previously, to support these strategies when reading at home.
