Teams have been attending weekly meetings to prepare for their debates and public speaking competitions and should be proud of the efforts they have put in, especially those participating in debating and public speaking events for the first time. Our final round of Interschool Debating event will take place on July 25th at St. Bernard’s College in Essendon and we encourage parents and guardians to come along to support students participating.

Jason Anastasi recently competed in the Wyndham Public Speaking Competition at the Wyndham Youth Resource Centre. Jason put in a fantastic effort at the competition, completing both a prepared and an impromptu speech. Unfortunately, Jason did not win the competition but it was a pleasure to watch him speak and he had the crowd very engaged.

Debating Captain Zac Geddes and Lauren Donaldson competed in the prestigious Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority Plain English Speaking Award (PESA) on the 30th of May. The competition was fierce with many senior students presenting speeches on a variety of local and global topics. Unfortunately Zac and Lauren did not get through to the next round of PESA.  Zac and Lauren will also be representing our school at the State Finals of the Rostrum Public Speaking Competition at St. Kevin’s College in Toorak on the 19th of June.

We have had a busy term in Debating and Public Speaking and look forward to Junior School Debating in Semester Two, signs up for Junior Debating will take place early in Term Three. GO TEAM STAUGHTON!

Student Reflection – Jason Anastasi

On the 14th of May, I competed in the Wyndham Youth Public Speaking competition. It was an awesome experience and a great time. In my speech about animal testing I brought up alternatives and cures for stopping this cruel act and the adjudicators seemed to take a liking to it, which is always appreciated. There was a range of different aged and skilled students from across the western suburbs that I was lucky enough to challenge on the night. Overall, it was a good time.
