Holiday Reading

Holiday Reading
During the holiday period it is important that students maintain regular reading practices to continue their reading improvement. At Staughton, we encourage our students to read their ‘Just Right Texts’ for a minimum of 20 minutes a day, and they should continue this practice over the break. The holidays also provide an excellent opportunity for students to get a head start on the texts that will be studied in English during Term 3. Below is a list of the texts that will be studied during Term 3 across year levels.
Term 3 English Reading List
Year 7 – Holes Louis Sachar
Year 8 – All students have previously read Tomorrow When the War Began (John Marsden) and should revisit this novel over the break, as it will be beneficial for the comparative unit on ‘Invasion'
Year 9 – The Hunger Games Suzanne Collins
Year 10 – To Kill a Mocking Bird Harper Lee
Year 11 – Things We Didn’t See Coming Steven Amsterdam
Year 12 – Summer of the Seventeenth Doll Ray Lawler and This Boy’s Life Tobias Wolff
Year 10 Literature – Breakfast at Tiffany’s Truman Capote
Year 11 Literature – In Cold Blood Truman Capote
We encourage all students to return to school having read their English text and some year levels may have work that accompanies reading. You can help your child by encouraging them to find quiet time to read, away from distractions and technology. Student’s benefit from ‘thinking aloud’ when reading and we encourage you to talk about reading with your child. Here are some questions you could use as prompts:
- Where is your book set and in what time period?
 - What type of person is the main character?
 - Is this book like anything else you have read?
 - Tell me about the plot/story line
