from the Principal .....

Dear Parents/Caregivers/students and staff

A very busy few weeks with lots of activities at the school.

Footloose

The production of Footloose was fantastic!! Please see the article elsewhere in this newsletter.  Big thanks to teachers Marty Rice, Laura Knox, Ainslie Samec and numerous other staff involved in the production  and of course the students. Not enough can be said about how much work, effort, time, loss of sleep has gone into the production over the last few months.  Congratulations to everyone involved.

Course Counselling

The last few weeks our current Years 9, 10 & 11 students have been going through subject selection and course counselling for 2020.  The students and their parents/caregivers, after subject selections, have had individual meetings with the Year Level Co-ordinators or Assistant Principals as well as our Careers/Pathways Manager to discuss their selections and what pathways will be available to them.

Accidents and Accident Cover

Children will always have accidents.  As much as we try to prevent them, they are an unfortunate fact of life.

When the bills arrive it often comes as a nasty shock that some expenses may not be covered by Medicare or private medical insurance.  For example, did you know that if an ambulance is called for your child, that you, the parent must meet the expense?

Children’s Accident Insurance/ambulance cover policies are purchased by many parents as part of risk management for their families.

Please note the Department of Education and Training Victoria does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students.

Parents/guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/transport and any other transport costs.

School Zone Speed Limits And Student Drop Off And Pick Up

Parents/Carers are reminded about School Speed Zones and the importance of observing these zones for the safety of all our young people. School Speed Zones are in place between 8.00-9.30am and 2.30-4.00pm, and the speed limit for our school zone at these times is 40km/h.

For the safety of our students it is very important that parents/carers observe the rules regarding “No Standing” zones in the vicinity of the school crossing. The No Standing zones are there to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic through the crossing, and to ensure drivers’ view of the crossing is unobstructed by illegally parked cars. For the safety of our young people, please observe these signs.

Additionally, I would request that parents/carers not drive into the college to drop off or pick up students. With well over 900 students arriving and leaving at around the same time each morning and afternoon, it is not only impractical to have a large number of vehicles entering and leaving the college grounds at these times, it is also dangerous to mix vehicles with this number of young pedestrians, most of whom are not on the lookout for motor vehicles once they enter the college grounds. Please assist us to ensure the continued safety of our students by not driving into the college at these times.

A REMINDER THAT U TURNS ARE ILLEGAL IN BERNARD STREET AT THE FRONT OF THE SCHOOL

Congratulations to

Dawn Bennett, school Bursar who recently celebrated 35 years service (including 2 years in Hong Kong) to the Scouts 1st Beaumaris Cub Scouts group.

Congratulations Dawn - quite an achievement.

Congratulations also to JOSHUA STEIN of Year 9.

Joshua is a member of the  15th Brighton Venturer Unit and has earned the Australian Scout Medallion.  To attain the top award in each of the five sections in Scouting reflects initiative in tackling this challenge, sustained effort over many months and years, plus self discipline, teamwork and leadership.  Only a small percentage reach this level.  These are the top achievers among Scouting’s 42 million members globally.

Well done Joshua.
