Y10 & 11 Senior Pathways Information 2016-2017

Dear Parents/Guardians

 

In order to assist your Son / Daughter in the selection of the most appropriate senior program for 2017, you are invited to a Pathways Information Evening on Thursday the 28th of July 7.00- 8.30pm for students moving from Year 10 into Year 11 and Thursday the 4th of August 7.00- 8.30pm for students moving from Year 11 into Year 12. These events will be held at the School in C block and will include information about VCE, VCAL, and Victorian Baccalaureate and VET programs. Teachers from each of the Key Learning areas will be available, allowing parents and students the opportunity to ask questions.

 

The Agenda for the Evening is as follows:

6.45pm – arrival and seating.

7.00pm – Welcome and Introduction - senior programs offered at Fairhills: VCE, VCAL Victorian Baccalaureate and VET for Years 10-11. VCE,VCAL, Victorian Baccalaureate, VET, University Pre requisites,  ATAR and scaling for Years 11-12.

7.50pm –Key Learning Area Representatives will be introduced and outline subjects offered at Fairhills. 

8.00pm – 8.30pm – Parents and students will be given an opportunity to ask questions of individual representatives. It is our intention to keep formalities to a minimum to allow plenty of time for questions and discussion.

 

This event will be just one of the steps in the Pathways planning for all Year 10/11 students.

Prior to this event students have:

  • Participated in an information session outlining possible senior programs: VCE, VCAL, Victorian Baccalaureate and VETis as part of the Tutorial program.
  • Online Careers testing as part of their Managed Individual Pathway planning and development of an Action Plan. All Year 10 students received counselling notes outlining possible subject choices.
  • Heard from all Key Learning Area Representatives and current students outlining the content of each subject on offer in 2017.
  • Been instructed on how to complete the Preliminary Program selection sheet and deadlines will be outlined.

Senior Program Planning Packages will be distributed on the night for Year 10 – 11 students, (those students unable to attend will receive their package at school on the 29th of July). Year 11 – 12 students will receive their Program Planning Packages in Tutorial on the 25th July.

  • Where to Now? Booklet.
  • Preliminary Program/Subject selection sheets
  • Subjects available at Fairhills
  • Fact sheets, VCE, VCAL, Victorian Baccalaureate, VETis,  Fairhills Accelerated Program, University Enhancement studies and Distance Education
  • 2016 -2017 Timeline
  • VETis programs offered as part of the Mullum Cluster. VETis Application form
  • Australian School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships – how they work?
  • Important Links – Fairhills Careers website, Senior School Pathways Handbook, VCAA, VTAC.

During Term 2 all Year 10 students attended a ‘Managed Individual Pathways’ Interview, with the Careers Practitioner – Elizabeth Rundle.  At this interview students developed a pathway and ‘Action Plan’, a copy of these counselling notes were sent home with them. (Copies are also on file in the Careers office). During Tutorial All Year 11 students have had opportunity to develop their Careers Planner online – www.fairhillscareers.com.au a student secure area.

 

Students have also been given an opportunity in Tutorial classes to complete online Career testing in an endeavour to develop a list of possible Careers / Job suggestions.

As you can appreciate program selection for the senior years of Secondary School is a difficult and complex process.

Events designed to support parents and students in this process:

Subject selection panels (2- 6pm September  7th  & 12th in the Careers office) -There will be a Panel of staff available on these days to answer any concerns / questions in relation to the Final Subject Selections.
