Landscape Design

Eastern Alliance for Sustainable Learning (EASL) has awarded Fairhills High School a grant of $1000. Our Sustainability leaders Jose Melegrito and Seamus Starr have been busy working on a design to rejuvenate an area of the school behind C Block. This is a project led by these boys and will involve Year 9 and Year 11 students doing the planting later in the year. At the moment the leaders have been researching native plants for the area. Here is an update from the boys who are holding a landscape design developed and drawn by them under the guidance of  Mr Gary Prasad.

You've probably noticed the landscape behind the C-Block building in dire need of some love. Not only is it quite bare, it's recently been damaging classrooms with rainwater run-off. This otherwise quiet corner of the school simply demanded a resounding change. Luckily, we were one of a handful of successful applicants of a thousand-dollar grant from the Eastern Alliance for Sustainable Learning to fund a project involving both the school's community and sustainability. So far, we've drawn a scale plan of the current area and are now welcoming ideas from the entire school of what should be there. Perhaps a few new benches or even an outdoor classroom? We're definitely planning to address the water-runoff problem and to landscape it into more of a garden. Once we finalise a design, we'll begin putting it into action, primarily involving the Year 9 Global and VCAL students.  Although a thousand-dollar budget allows little room to splurge; it would definitely be a big step, not only in giving Fairhills some much-deserved love, but also in breaking new ground in making our school greener and more sustainable.
