Sports Round-Up

Sports Report

By Lisa Currey

Six of our students attended the NSWCHSSA in Homebush from 7th-9th September. Our oldest representative, Jordan Lonnen participated in three individual events as well as performing as a member of the North West 4x400m relay team. A huge achievement in his final year of schooling whilst studying for his exams. Emily Hartnett produced personal bests in her events whilst the girls 15 years 4x100m relay (Bella Suckling, Megan Crutcher, Samantha Marchant, Matilda Currey) also produced a personal best, running their relay in just over 58 seconds. All students performed extremely well in tough wet conditions and were up against competitors from all over NSW who have access to world class training facilities. Thank you to the local business and P & C who were able to support the students with monetary contributions.

Our 15s netball team attended Quirindi to play for a place in the regional final. Quirindi High came out strong with a goal shooter who knew how to work the circle. A change of positioning after the first quarter saw Wee Waa High decrease the difference in the score. Again, some positional changes in the second half saw the girls keep Quirindi High's goals to a minimum. Wee Waa High won the statistics in the second half but unfortunately were unable to pull back the goal difference created in the first half of the game. Thank you to Kerry Crutcher for attending to support the girls and Mrs Currey for umpiring.

Last Wednesday 14th September a group of 17 students from years 7-10 attended the Northern Inland regional finals of the Netball Schools Cup competition.

It was an early start with students, parents, volunteers and staff leaving around 5am to arrive in Tamworth in time ready to start their first game. Our 9/10 boys team consisted of students from years 7-10 who were keen to get on the court. The boys played fast and furious netball up against teams from public and catholic schools. During the day they continued to develop their netball skills and sportsmanship. A big thank you to Mrs Wallington and Mrs Slee for coaching and scoring for the boys team. Our 9/10 girls team were a bit sluggish when they took to the court in their first game against McCarthy Catholic College (who later won the day). They grew with intensity over the day end up in 5th position after the cross-pool games. A big thank you to Kerry Crutcher coached and scored for the girls team.

A special shout out to Lorna Gleeson who attended as one of our umpires for the day. Without Lorna we wouldn't have been able to enter both our teams. Thank you to Mrs Currey for umpiring as well.

Wee Waa High had been entered in some Gala Days 'Jamie Lyon Killa 9s' and 'League Tag' however lack of nominations has seen the local days cancelled. Hopefully we will attend the regional final days in term 4.

Our 14s boys cricket team was due to play Narrabri High in the Knock Out competition yesterday, however, due to the flooding and wet weather this has been postponed. Mrs Wallington is coaching this team and is keen to get out onto the cricket pitch in some fine spring sunshine next term.

Miss Roscoe has called for girls 14 years and under to nominate for the school Knock Out softball team that is due to play at a regional gala day later in term 4. Girls in this age group are encouraged to nominate and experience the very strategic and challenging game of softball. See Miss Roscoe if you are keen to play.

Girls in years 7-11 have also been asked to nominate for the North West Opens girls softball trials to take place in Tamworth in term 4. Students are required to find their own transport to the trials, must have a strong knowledge of the game of softball and be able to attend the NSWCHSSA softball championships in term 1, 2023. If your daughter is keen to nominate, she is required to see Mrs Currey by the end of week 1 next term.

Students were asked to provide feedback on Knock Out sporting teams they would like to see nominated by Wee Waa High School for the 2023 competition. Thank you to those students who completed the survey and with consultation of staff Mrs Currey has made the nominations through the DASH system for next year. Some sports nominated include; netball, volleyball, softball, touch football.

Finally, last week Matilda Currey attended the North West Opens girls cricket trials in Tamworth. Matilda was selected as the team wicket keeper and will attended the NSWCHSSA cricket championships in Kingscliff in early November. A big congratulations to Kyna Allen who attended the boys trials and was up against students in senior years. Kyne said he was happy with how he performed at the trials and enjoyed his day of meeting new people.
