Rubik's Cube

Did you realise that solving a Rubik's Cube can be done using an algebraic formula! Beyond the formula, solving a Rubik's Cube also requires persistence and patience? In fact many solutions to solving problems in maths and life in general require persistence and patience! Working towards solving a Rubik's Cube can support your child in developing these traits and help them be equipped for challenges they may face in their careers and personal lives in the future.

HOW TO DO IT

Encourage your child to solve a Rubik's Cube without any assistance. As they are having a go, ask your child questions to explain what strategy they are using and what they are noticing. They might be trying to solve one colour face at a time or they might be noticing patterns. Getting them to think about their logic for solving the Rubik's Cube is great for their mathematical thinking. Remind them about persistence and patience!

If they have a had really good go at trying to solve the cube on their own, they might like to use the Rubik Solution Guide (link below) to learn about the Rubik's Cube and the algebraic formulas used to solve it. As they use the guide and solve the cube, continue to ask them questions such as ‘Why do you think this approach works?’ and ‘Are you surprised by the technique you’ve learned to solve the cube?

Happy persistent and patient cubing!
