Sharing the Joy of Diwali

Diwali was celebrated last week by Hindus, Sikhs, Newar Buddhists around the world. It is the most important Hindu festival which is also known as the Festival of Light. It focuses on the triumph of good over evil.

At Burrendah, we like to acknowledge a variety of cultural and religious festivals which our students and their families celebrate. It helps us all to gain knowledge of different cultural practices and develops positive attitudes towards cultural differences in our culturally diverse community.

We would like to thank Mrs Sesetti and Mrs Marcia Clayton for decorating the stage, Mrs Prasanthi Chokkala for the colourful powdered rangoli and Mrs Swagatika Rath for the flower rangoli in the library.

Each classroom prepared their own rangoli to mark the special occasion, Miss Morley’s Year 3s and Miss Guilfoyle’s PrePrimary- Year 1 also made diyas to celebrate the Festival of Light.

Culture Club Philippines

It gives me great pleasure to present my own culture this term. Filipinos were the 5th largest migrant group from 2019- 2020 in Western Australia and they will continue to arrive in their numbers once approved. Although we only have a few families from the Philippines at Burrendah, we are all keen to feature the Philippines this term. Mrs Biticon rushed from work to give Ms Lim and I a hand running the activity. She and Mr Biticon made the Bahay Kubo which features in the photos in 2020 for Harmony Day

Last week we made jeepneys which are our colourful public transportation. They are found all around the country and will stop anywhere along their route as long as you say “PARA” which means stop. The children really enjoyed making these. Next Culture Club – Nov 11.

Parliament House Tour and Lunch with Dr Jags Krishnan MLA- Member for Riverton

On October 21, a group of parents were invited to Parliament House by Dr Jags for a tour and a very special lunch in the Parliament House dining room. The group was made up of parents that had contributed to our school through the P&C, Culture Club program or were active members of our EAL/D Parent Network Group. It was an honour for all of us to take part in this tour and lunch. At lunch we were also hosted by the member for Carine- Mr Paul Lilburne MLA who replaced Mr Sam Lim MP who was unable to make it.

Many thanks to Dr Jags and his Electorate Officer Daniel Coombs for making this memorable visit to Parliament House possible.
