Seesaw Schedule
Hi families, Over the coming weeks, you will notice that our Seesaw Learning Posts have been created in collaboration with our children. The posts will feature a reflection of a piece of work that they believe shows their current achievement and “next steps” in their learning. As always, each post will be based on our learning progressions, which have been adapted from the Victorian F-10 Curriculum. We believe that this process will strengthen your child’s voice and agency in talking about their learning and progress. This is a trial process that we will evaluate and refine its effectiveness at the end of the year. We look forward to sharing the children’s reflections and goals for their learning! Our children have been busy exploring the different pathways connected to the Biological Sciences curriculum.
Our Prep children have been exploring their curiosities about animals and what animals need to survive and thrive in different landscapes. Our Prep children have wondered about the different features of animals and how animals have changed to adapt to their environments, some examples including pigs covering themselves in mud to cool themselves down.
Our children in One Hub shared their curiosities about how different environments have changed over time and how these changes have impacted the inhabitants of the different landscapes. Together, they are exploring the role that climate change has played in creating these changes, and how our impact as humans have affected these changes.
Following their First Encounter to Brimbank Park, the children in the Second Hub have been wondering about how the recent floods have impacted the delicate systems within the park. They have ‘relaunched’ the image of a tree filled with rubbish and debri that was caused by the floods. The children will continue to follow their curiosities as the educators guide them towards understanding the intricate connections between climate change, human impact and extreme weather patterns. Our children in the Three-Four Hub are following their curiosities around systems and biomes and have started investigating the difference between these systems and biomes. They will visit Point Gellibrand rock pools to cement this knowledge and apply their learnings.
Our children in the Five Six Hub have begun exploring humans' impact on the natural environment from an industry and manufacturing perspective. They have shared their wonderings around how major industries have contributed to creating imbalance within certain systems and how they are working to repair some of the damage they have caused. Some of the industries that they have been investigating include the meat and cattle industry, the fashion industry and the energy industry.
Well families! What a wonderful experience it was to have our children engage in maths games and provocations with you all!
A big thank you to all who came along to observe, question and wonder. Our numeracy philosophy is something we’re very proud of at St John’s, and it was an absolute pleasure to display a glimpse of what we do.
A big thank you too to our staff for preparing our children and spaces for the evening.
If you have any other questions related to Numeracy learning at St John’s, please feel free to email either Mitch or Mairead.

As a welcoming and caring community, we all strive to make a commitment to uphold the safety and wellbeing of every child. In doing this, we make a commitment as an adult in this community to play our part, to ensure that child safety is considered first and foremost. NAPCAN is the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect. There are a number of informative resources available at https://www.napcan.org.au/ to ensure that Child Safety is pivotal in all organisations that work for the benefit of children, including our community here at St. John’s Catholic Primary School.
