Service Learning news: How can you help?

One of our greatest challenges as adults is helping our young people believe in themselves and their capacity to achieve extraordinary things. At a time when it is very easy to see the bad in the world, we want our children to not only see the good but also, be the good in the world. I invite you to speak to your children about the issues that mean most to them and discuss how they could contribute to the cause. Meaningful action does not have to be time consuming or overwhelming but it can make a difference for all parties involved.

This term is going to be a big one for Service at Shelford. There will be a range of opportunities for our community to come together to contribute to a worthy cause.

We can all do extraordinary things. The first step is believing that it is possible.

Community care appeal

If you had to leave your home and everything in it forever, what would you take?

It must fit into a standard sized suitcase. This was the reality for many Ukrainian’s who had to leave everything behind and establish a new life in Australia. Throughout Week 2 and 3, we are asking the Shelford Community to band together to support struggling Ukrainian families that have relocated to Melbourne due to war. Having escaped with little more than the clothing on their backs and a suitcase, rebuilding a life in Australia has been challenging. Finding housing, employment, education and care opportunities for children; it is all challenging when you do not have the proper medical checks and paperwork required. Establishing new social networks and managing the emotional strain of leaving home is taxing on the heart.

Our Year 11’s have planned a range of activities to create understanding and awareness of the challenges that these people face every day.  We are asking families to help us by contributing to the following:

  • donate non-perishable food items and cleaning and sanitary products
  • donate new socks, underwear and clothing or consider rehoming excellent used condition clothing such as jackets, jeans, shorts, hats and jumpers
  • donate money
  • donate gift cards.
