AUSTRALIAN INFORMATICS OLYMPIAD 2022

The Australian Informatics Olympiad (AIO) is an annual advanced problem-solving and computer programming contest for high school students run by the Australian Mathematical Trust. It is a 3-hour open book exam where the invited participants must apply problem-solving skills and algorithmic thinking to come up with strategies for tackling six original problems of increasing difficulty, and subsequently, write computer programs (in either C, C++, Java or Python 3) to implement these strategies.

This year, Year 12 Specialist Maths and Software Development student, Kevin Yu, had the privilege to sit the Senior Division of this exam on Thursday 25 August, under the supervision of Dr Sandy Law and Mr Bill Manolas (We also thank Mr George Georgiadis for liaising with the Australian Mathematical Trust, and Ms Mary Ho for providing some supporting equipment).

By applying his skills in computer science and mathematical modeling, Kevin was able to attempt many of the contest problems and scored an overall 400 out of 600 points. Furthermore, he received a Perfect Score on four separate problems. For his achievement, Kevin was awarded a Bronze award, narrowly missing out on the Silver by a mere 22 points. Well done!
