This term in Inquiry, the Foundation students are studying a science unit about life and the Animal World. This is such an exciting topic for the students and they are always eager to extend their knowledge in this area! They are investigating what is classified as living and non-living and learning about what living things need to successfully survive, including themselves.
Throughout the Term, students will also be introduced to the idea that animals live in different places where their basic needs (including food, water and shelter) are met, and that animals have a variety of external features to suit their environment. They will be exploring a variety of habitats such as the ocean, rainforests, deserts and snow and looking at the different animals that live in these environments.
During the course of this Inquiry Unit of work, some of the questions they will explore are:
How do we know if something is alive?
What do animals need to stay alive?
What do living things need in order to grow and change?
What are some different types of animals that we know of?
How do we classify (sort) them?
How do animals interact?
What do animals eat?
What features help animals to survive in their habitat?
How do animals move? How does this help them survive?
What are the basic needs of humans? How do these needs compare to the needs of other animals?
SHOE BOXES WANTED!
To demonstrate their understanding of what living things need to survive, we will be asking students to construct a habitat for an animal of their choosing, using a shoe box. In order to do this, we need your help - if you have any shoe boxes that you could donate, it would be much appreciated!
We are very excited to announce that on Tuesday 8th November (week 6), the Foundation students will be going on an excursion to Healesville Sanctuary! Parent helpers will be required for this excursion - more details regarding the arrangements for this will be provided via Compass in the coming weeks.
During our English lessons this Term, the students have been working hard in all areas of their learning. As we work our way through the Foundation InitiaLit Program, the students are working hard to consolidate their knowledge learned in class by completing a variety of English activities. It is amazing to see how well everyone is reading and writing - we are very proud of everyone’s achievements!
We have been focusing on using our sound-letter knowledge to segment individual sounds and digraphs in words so that we can decode them to read and write them. We have been making attempts to read and spell digraphs such as; wh, th, oo, ng and ay.
We have also been working hard at remembering our tricky words and have been making attempts to spell them.
The Foundation students have been practising their handwriting skills by making sure they use the correct formation and starting points for their letters. We have continued to focus on using full stops, capital letters and leaving spaces between our words when writing sentences.
We have been learning about the structure and purpose of Narrative stories and soon we will begin creating our very own Picture Story Books!
