Senior School

From the Head of Senior School
Following the excitement of the inaugural Year Ten Social on Friday night, Year Ten students have enjoyed having the Senior School to themselves this week. After finalising their assessments for the year on Monday, some students represented the School at the Interschool Athletics Carnival on Tuesday while the rest of the cohort began their Peer Support Training. This year group plays a vital role in the restructure next year and equipping them with the skills to mentor and support younger students effectively is vital.
Great Southern Grammar is a member of Peer Support Australia and we use their program and activities to engage students in this process. Topics covered included effective communication and listening, empathy, and the effective running of activities. Students spend some time reflecting on their own journeys through school to help inform them of how they can best support younger students.
Year Ten Social by Sam Jeffery
This term, the Year Ten cohort was fortunate enough to have a year group social organised by Miss Smith and the Year Ten members of the Senior School Committee. The theme was the letter ‘F’ and we saw an array of amazing costumes from fairies and FBI to fenceposts and fettucine. Out of the many fun activities we did, the standouts were definitely the ‘not so synchronised’ group dancing, amazing fashion parade and many mosh pits. Overall, the social was an awesome experience full of food, fun, friends and games and a great way to finish a stressful week of exams.
Man Up
On Tuesday, we welcomed MAN UP WA to speak to Year Nine and Year Ten boys. A group of boys had the following to say after their session:
Recently, the Year Ten boys had the opportunity to explore the ideas of positive masculinity with an organisation called ManUp. Together, with the awesome group of guys from the organisation, we went through the stigma, stereotypes and mental health aspects surrounding being a positive male figure, and how this can positively change our lives and those around us. We also went into the way in which peer pressure among men is different from normal peer pressure, and how we can avoid it, break the stigma, and keep ourselves and our friends safe while keeping relationships strong. A huge thanks to the guys from ManUp for such an awesome and educational experience that is sure to help all of us in the future to become better people.
