Senior Unit - 5/6
Author Visit
On Monday the 11th of May, Australian author Anna Ciddor visited W.PS to do a presentation about her writing process and the books she’s written. Everyone found Anna’s presentation engaging and exciting. The presentation consisted of a readings from her book The Boy Who Stepped Through Time (a story about a young boy by the name of Perry who finds himself transported through time while on a holiday in France) which everybody enjoyed. Anna talked us through the writing process and showed us her countless drafts and plans for her illustrations (which she draws herself). She also explained where she gets inspiration for her characters (most of which are based off her family) and plots. It was very interesting to hear how long a piece of writing takes to go from an idea, through to a published novel. By Elle
CDSSA Soccer
On Friday the 13th of May, the year 5/6 school soccer team will be heading to Dixon Field in Gisborne to compete in the CDSSA Soccer Championships. We have all been training extremely hard at recess and lunch and are all incredibly excited for the big day. The boy’s first game will be at 10:00am on pitch 2 and the girl’s first game will be at 10:20am on pitch 3. Thanks to Mr. Spilsted for helping us train and to Mrs. Connell for organising the day.
Fingers-crossed the rain holds off and the day doesn’t get postponed until Friday the 20th of May.
Good luck to all who are playing! By Ellie and Bronte
Applied Maths Task
During the last week and a half, students have been creating a sustainable nature park for maths. Students were given a letter from an unknown relative saying that they were going to be given a plot of land. Students were told to turn this land into a Sustainable Nature Park and given 1 million dollars to spend. Students then got to choose from a list of items to put in their nature park. While students were doing this, they had to use addition strategies to find out the running total of the items that they have picked and make sure that they weren’t going over their budget. After they had chosen from the list, students then had the opportunity to go onto hardware websites e.g. Bunnings, and choose more items that they would like to add e.g. garden beds, pot plants, trees etc. Students were urged to use as close to 1 million dollars as they could. After students worked out their costings, they then created a map of the nature park using grid paper and added what they had purchased. By Lachie
