Year 11 Study Skills

Year 11 Study Skills

On Friday the 1st of April our Year 11 VCE students were treated to an incredibly useful study skills presentation by the Latrobe University Education Partnerships Program in the Flexible Learning Centre during periods 1 and 2.

This is a government funded program to support state school students in their journey to tertiary education.

Willow and her team of Latrobe University students were able to use their own study experiences as real-life examples. Many of us related to their examples of procrastination and time wasters… he he.

Today the students learnt important skills that will not only support their school study but can be transferred to many day-to-day activities.

They learnt about:

  1. Stress; good stress vs bad stress
  2. Time management
  3. Prioritising
  4. Different types of learning styles
  5. Active vs passive learning
  6. Goal setting
  7. Different study techniques

Willow showed us that you can fit a lot into your day, have a great life, and do well at school if you just employ a few effective skills. One of the key activities to demonstrate this was the ‘rocks and the pebbles’ task.

Students had to imagine the rocks as ‘must do tasks’ and then the pebbles as ‘other activities. They learnt that if you put the rocks in the tub first (representing scheduling time to complete important tasks), then you can fit the pebbles (all other activities) around them.

How do you fit those pebbles in??

This demonstrated to me the old saying ‘If you want something done ask a busy person’. And the reason is that they are master schedulers!

They also gave us strange (but useful) advice about swallowing frogs first thing in the morning!!!

After concentrating solidly for 2 hours, we finished up the morning with a delicious morning tea.

We hope our students are now on the path to using their time effectively to enjoy their senior studies.

Thank you, Willow, and team.

Thank you, students, for participating so enthusiastically.
