Food Lab and Staying Steady

Excursions Year 9 & 10

Foodlab Excursion- Year 9A & 9B   at Whittlesea Tech School

During the last week of February, Class 9A and 9B were extremely lucky to participate in the Whittlesea Tech School’s two-day ‘Foodlab’ Design Challenge Excursion, where they used their innovation processes to design a food-based prototype to solve the ‘real-life’ problem of eliminating excess mushroom stalk waste for the local participating industry partner Costa Mushrooms. Students used their food technology skills, in tandem with chef tools and equipment, (similar to those found in a ‘MasterChef’ Kitchen), to design and test recipes that incorporated the mushroom stalks for potential marketing to a wider audience. Many thanks to Paula Batsakis and Danny Hiscoke, who took time out of their regular scheduled classes to support all of the Year 9 students and myself on this excursion. A delicious experience was enjoyed from those who attended!

Staying Steady for Year 10 at Whittlesea Tech School:

During the month of March, students from Classes 10A, 10B and 10C participated in the Whittlesea Tech School’s two-day ‘Staying Steady’ Design Challenge Excursion, where they used their innovation processes to become mobility technologists, to design high-tech physical prototypes to solve the ‘real-life’ problem of preventing fall injuries for our ageing population. Students used their

technology and communication skills, with TinkerCad 3D printing software and coding with Micro:bit parts to develop their physical

prototypes; as well as applying other ‘soft’ skills required for their upcoming work experience placements in Term 2.

Many thanks to Matt Tucker, Karen Panousieris,  Wanda Waligora, Paul Chapman and Danny Hiscoke who took time out of their regular scheduled classes to support all of the Year 10 students and myself on this excursion. The simulated workplace environment experience provided at the Tech School was productive and enjoyed by those students who attended!
