Year 1/2–Celebrating Learning

1/2 - Mainstream

This term the 1/2 mainstream  classes have been investigating, exploring, recording, observing, drawing and writing about minibeasts. Lessons have involved being in the beautiful TPS garden, as well as in the classroom, learning and listening to each other share interesting facts about butterflies, bees, worms, ants and snails.

The teachers have been super proud of our deadly learners and how they have worked together and shown such care and respect for minibeast habitats and their role within interconnected ecosystems. They have become even more knowledgeable about minibeasts, as evident through their fantastic information reports.

A highlight of the unit was the wonderful bee talk from the very knowledgeable Katrina (a parent of one of our students). We learnt about native bees, such as the blue-banded bee and how to spot the difference between a fly and a bee.

1/2 - Steiner

Class One

Class One has just completed our Letters to Text Main Lesson. We heard a number of traditional fairy tales and responded to these in creative ways, building on our sentences writing skills. We are now onto our Queendom of Numeria Main Lesson (the four processes in maths). Through imaginative story and with the aid of concrete materials, the children are learning about the different ways we can manipulate and organise numbers using plus, minus, multiply and divide symbols.

Class Two

Class Two has just completed our Celtic Wonder Tales Main Lesson. We heard a number of traditional Celtic stories as well as learning about aspects of their culture and some of the ways the world has changed over time. The children wrote an anthology of information reports about magical creatures from the Celtic stories. This meant practicing artistic writing fonts for our titles (bubble writing, shadow writing etc), and organising our thoughts into categories and then dot points. We have now begun our Times Tables and Number Patterns Main Lesson, following the story of Ida The Spider. The children are learning about the special relationships that numbers have with geometric forms, square numbers, and we are developing our knowledge of times tables (2’s to 9’s) and how they relate to the world beyond the classroom.

Our focus in both Class One and Two across the board, is on cultivating intrinsic motivation to learn (and to challenge ourselves), bridging the connections between music, art, math and literacy – and developing a real sense of purpose and pride in what we do.
