School Sport
Term 2, sport is on and happening! Get excited, we sure are! We have a very busy term coming up with Cross Country, Athletics, interschool sports as well as our every week lunch time programs. If there are any questions, please see Sam Poynton.
Cross Country
The College Cross Country Carnival took place this week, down at Picnic Point. It was wonderful to get back into it and see the competitive spirit of our school runners. The weather held out for us, and the kids pounded along the river track. We will be having a full team heading to Regionals to represent our College.
Athletics Carnival
Interschool Sport
We had a fantastic start to interschool sport last term, and a bigger response this term with hundreds of students utilising the online sign-up system. Due to the number of students wanting to participate in some sports, trials will be held to put together the school team. These will be held at lunch times in the BARC, please see below dates for specific sports.
The important dates to remember for this term:
Event | Date |
---|---|
Gippsland Boys AFL | Tuesday 24th May |
Basketball Trials | Wednesday 25th May in BARC at lunch time |
Netball Trials | Monday 6th June in BARC at lunch time |
East Gippsland Senior Hockey, Basketball and Table Tennis | Wednesday 15th June |
East Gippsland Soccer, Netball and Badminton | Tuesday 21st June |
East Gippsland Boys AFL
At the end of Term 1, our boys AFL teams competed in the East Gippsland AFL competition. All the boys played extremely well, and were a real credit to our College with their demonstration of sportsmanship. Our juniors played a great game, despite the score, showing the skill that will be further developed as they progress through their years. Our seniors showed just how much fun can be had with interschool sport, with some boys giving AFL a go for the very first time. A footy is apparently a lot harder to bounce than a basketball.
Our intermediate boys put on a spectacular display of skill and finesse to take the win and progress through to the next level. They will travel to Yinnar later this month, and play in a round robin again Wonthaggi, Lavalla and Marist Sion. We wish them all the best!
Lunchtime Activities
Sport never sleeps at BSC, there is always something to be part of and to do.
GippSport: Our links with GippSport are strengthening as the program develops. We have a selected group of senior boys that are working in conjunction with GippSport to ensure that the program for kids is driven by kids.
Year 7 and 8 students are invited to participate Friday lunch times.
Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 students are invited to participate Thursday lunch times.
Activity | |
---|---|
Week 3 and 4 | Ultimate Frisbee |
Week 5 and 6 | 3v3 Basketball |
Week 7 and 8 | Futsal |
Week 9 | Staff vs Students Netball |
Four-Square Courts
Over the school holidays, a number of four-square courts have been painted around the school. This is a great way to keep active at lunch and have some fun with friends. Each Hub has been given some tennis balls for students to borrow to play handball. We are waiting on a delivery of hi-bounce balls, but feel free to bring your own and have some fun.
Year 11 and 12 Gym Sessions
The lunch time gym sessions for senior students started this week, and it was great to see some students getting involved and making use of our new school gym equipment. These sessions are free for students to access as part of our Active Schools program and are run by the qualified staff at RUFit.
Reminders
BARC
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday lunch times students are invited to shoot hoops or self organise basketball games in the BARC. We have been asked to give a general reminder that no food is to be taken into the BARC stadium, and that students aren’t to be using the general public facilities during this time either, access out via the foyer is not permitted. We are very lucky to be able to use the stadium, so let’s look after it.
Compass Permissions
The online permission system through the Compass portal is working very well so far. All sport events that require parent/carer permission will be submitted through Compass. Parents/Carers will be notified that their child has been selected into a sport, and to then follow the prompts to complete the permission under ‘event invites’. If students require a paper copy of the permissions, they can see their respective Hub.
For any questions about school sport, please see Sam Poynton or Renee Barry.
Sport Success Stories
Tom Hardwick was the sport trainee here at the College, and at the end of last year he left us to move to Melbourne and follow his dream netball career. Tom was selected in the U23 Victorian Men’s team and has recently competed at the Men’s National Netball Tournament held in Adelaide. His team gave a spectacular performance throughout the tournament week, only dropping one game, and found themselves in the Grand Final. In a nail biter of a game, unfortunately, the U23 Victorian side went down to QLD.
Throughout the tournament, trainers and sport scouts watch and make note of standout players and officials that could form the Australian teams. With his incredible performance and dedication to his netball, Tom has been named as one of the training partners for the Australian U23 Men’s Netball team. This is an absolutely incredible achievement, and something Tom has dreamed of since he started playing netball.
We are so proud of you Tom, and we cannot wait to see you in the green and gold.
