2022 Slattery Academic Captain - James Gurr

For what has been a disruptive but eventful finish to first term 2022, after having consistent interruptions throughout the term, whether it be flooding or still being impacted by the pandemic. Many boys have missed days of important school. Despite this, we made it through. With all year groups wrapping up exams and assignments, it is a good time than ever to wrap up the academic events this term.

At the beginning of the term we welcomed back the top 10 highest achieving graduates and present them with awards, and the boys with a goal – not to strive to be the top 10 but to be their personal best. We also congratulated the boys who received academic awards from Semester 2 2022. With more pressure on the boys in the last few weeks, morning tutoring sessions have been a hit with increased attendance than any other time this term. It is our goal to see these numbers not only grow but to be consistent through the following terms. The Careers Expo in Week 7 allowed the boys to have an insight into their potential futures beyond Marist College Ashgrove with a few old boys in attendance with many of the major universities set up stalls and gave out much-needed information for all grades.

Overall Term 1 has been chaotic but necessary. With Year 12s approaching the dreaded unit 4, now is the time for the entire school to commit, to their studies, to sport, to mission, to music and to anything that makes them Marist Men.

2022 Slattery Mission Captain - Braden Querido

Term 1 has proven to be both a chaotic yet enjoyable term. For Slattery, Mission thrived throughout the term, with a plethora of mission ventures occurring.

On Friday 11 March, the Lenten Fun Day was held. On this day, boys were able to participate in activities and purchase food and drink from the stalls that the pastoral houses across the College had set up. On this day, Slattery House ran a garlic bread stall which yielded much success, selling out all 320 slices of garlic bread by the halfway bell of first break. In total, Slattery was able to raise $800.00, adding substantially to the total of $5000.00 raised on the day. A huge thank you must go to Mr Keown, who both organised the supply of materials used to make the garlic bread, as well as overseeing several of the Slattery seniors in preparing and baking the garlic bread down in Hospitality.

Earlier during the term, many communities were severely impacted by the major floods across Queensland and New South Wales. One such community impacted by these floods was Trinity Catholic College in Lismore, New South Wales. During these floods, the school was subjected to floods as high as the rooflines of its buildings, destroying much of the school’s infrastructure and learning equipment. Despite many of our own boys’ families being impacted by the floods, our communal response in identifying and supporting the needs of the College resulted in approximately $10,000.00 being raised. Due to this very generous donation, Trinity College will be able to repair its damaged infrastructure and replace learning equipment within the classroom.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Slattery boys and their parents for their generosity this term. They have been very generous in their service to Mission at school and have been willing to get involved in helping those around us in our communities. Thank you, boys. Please find attached some photos taken during Slattery’s 2022 Coin Challenge. 313 are looking forward to their pizzas.

2022 Slattery Culture Captain - Spencer Hollett

Culture at Marist has been thriving over the past term with many events and many more still to come.

After a few months of delay, Music Camp finally got to take place from 11-13 March at Alexandra Heads. Boys got to rehearse new music and connect with mates in a really fun way. All the boys got involved with a bit of trivia, some time at the beach and of course a few games of bowling. Overall, the whole weekend was a huge success.

I’d like to give a massive congratulations to Aidan Phillips a Year 9 Slattery boy who performed for the Queensland Ballet in the performance of Sleeping Beauty. After practising for weeks, Aidan performed at the HOTA Hotel on the Gold Coast - this is an amazing effort.

Coming up, there are a lot of exciting events in the culture department with COVID-19 restrictions easing more and more over time. Wednesday 30 March, Marist will be celebrating a delayed Harmony Day with traditional dances performed by some of the boys in the boarding communities as well as a number of fun activities organised and run by the cultural leaders of the College. I’ll be hoping to see as many boys as possible participating and getting around what Harmony Day means for us as Marists.

Thursday 31 March, the Premier Ensembles concert will be taking place, giving all of the top bands and ensembles a chance to show what they have been working on and what these talented and hardworking students are capable of producing. The Autumn concert will also be taking place soon, in Week 2 of Term 2. This will be giving more ensembles a chance to show what they have been working on over the last term and on music camp.

It has been confirmed that Theatre Sports is back on this year run by the Slattery House. Theatre Sports is an extremely fun set of games and challenges to test your acting/ improvisation skills in front of an audience. Theatre Sports will be taking place in Term 2 and the teams will be formed by a selection of the Slattery seniors. Theatre Sports is some of the most fun at Marist, even in the crowd so please make sure to get around this, boys.

2022 Slattery Sports Captain - Thomas Prole

Term 1 in sport proved a successful start to the year for the boys in SlatteryHouse. Our Marist cricket aggregate was outstanding once again, finishing an extraordinary 2nd place. The 1st XI Cricket team also showed dominance throughout the season. Inaugural Captain Ryan Harten (312), and young batsman James Brandon (312) played their roles, helping the team finish the year in a nail-biting 2nd place – a terrific way to cap off the season.

It was good to see AFL growing in the AIC competition, with Marist recording its greatest number of teams entered in the competition since the introduction of the sport in 2019. Our 1st XVIII AFL squad had a rough start to the season; however, the courage shown by George Wood (310), Munroe Wood (310), Oliver Clements (311), and Oli Honner (312) provided a spark for the team, leading to two big wins in front of home crowds at Wilston Grange.

MCA volleyball had an entertaining season, with the overall aggregate finishing a solid 5th place.

Our swimmers were strong once again, finishing second and falling short narrowly to St. Peters Lutheran. Special mention must go to open athletes Jack Morrison (306), and Josh Casey (306) who captained the squad in 2022.

External competitions saw Charlie Gribble named in the Top 5 Powerlifters in Australia. As well, Elliot Aldridge and James Prole qualified for the Australian Track and Field Championship, which they will be competing in over the next week.

From my point of view, it was wonderful to see so many boys getting out and giving it a crack in Term 1. I’d like to thank everyone who was involved: parents, teachers, coaches, and of course, the students. Without your help, this term wouldn’t have run as smoothly as it did.
