Construction Immersion

Mr Andrew Devoy

With a disruptive start to this year’s Construction program due to weather and the pandemic, the Construction Immersion boys loaded up the trailer, tied down the timber posts, bearers and roofing joists to the roof racks on the ute and set off to site on Moola Rd. This year’s project is to construct a covered outdoor entertainment area at one of the College boarding houses. The entertainment area will consist of a paved area 6m (L) x 4.2(w) covered by a skillion roof pitched at 5 degrees.

The boys worked productively throughout the day, work carried out during the day provided the opportunity for the boys to develop new employability skills specific to the Construction industry. Tasks that were carried out consisted of:

  • Setting up a construction site
  • Planning and preparation
  • Identification of site boundaries
  • Setting out, installing and checking building lines
  • Site profiles were set out; boys used the Pythagoras theorem (3:4:5) to create a right angle to make sure the working area was square.
  • Used construction tools such as Laser level, Dumpy level, spirit level, drop saw, wheelbarrows and digging equipment.
  • Six pier holes were then dug at 350mm wide and 600 mm deep for the posts.
  • Clean‑up of the work area (storing material and packing up a worksite).
