GOODBYE TO THE CLASS OF 2018 - YEAR 12 ASSEMBLY

Students, staff and parents celebrated the end of compulsory schooling for our Year 12s this week.

I sincerely thank the staff at McKinnon who have shaped the next generation of Graduates.

I appreciate your incredible efforts on providing the best learning for our students.

Many parents end their formal association with the school and I thank all of you for your support over the many years.

The special relationship between parents and staff is part of the McKinnon magic!

I wish the Class of 2018 all the very best with their future endeavours and thank them for their service to McKinnon Secondary College.

OFFICIAL OPENING OF OUR NEW STUDY CENTRE

On Wednesday 10 October the Premier of Victoria The Hon. Daniel Andrews officially opened our Senior Centre.

Together with the local Member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos and the South East Metro Regional Director Stephen Gniel met staff, students and School Councillors.

This new Centre is an impressive build that has transformed McKinnon. It was a most happy occasion!

It has been delivered through incredible determination and meticulous planning and a dedicated team.

During that special occasion the Premier surprised us with an announcement of funding for the second campus as a pre-election promise to the tune of an incredible $70million.

This will enable the planning and construction of a 2nd campus for McKinnon at the Virginia Park Industrial Site.

We value the support and advocacy through this investment.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Will Hardy (Year 12) who participated in the Hephzibah Menuhin Memorial Award finals and won the Woodwind Section, playing two pieces of his VCE Recorder Program. In winning this competition he will go through to the Statewide 3MBS FM Young Performers Award to be held on 21 October.  This is such great news Will and you are a wonderful ambassador for our school community.

Congratulations to Diya Agarwal (Year 9), Isabella Bibby (Year 9), Liam Constantine (Year 11), Tia Finn (Year 9), Karleen Han (Year 9), Liana Kelemen (Year 8), and Fyonn Xie (Year 8) who performed on stage prior to the start of the VCE Leadership Awards ceremony on Friday 21 September, 2018.

These awards celebrate the achievements of VCE students as leaders both within their school and in their wider community.

An audience of over 100 people enjoyed the entertainment provided by the students who demonstrated not only their skill in playing their instrument but also their passion for music.

I would like to thank and acknowledge Ms Su Rogerson for her Direction of this Ensemble and to the students who represented the McKinnon Secondary College community with pride. May you continue to shine!

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to the seven Volleyball teams who participated in the Victorian Open during the weekend of 13/14 October.

Our best result was our Senior Girls who won the Open (Adults) Division 2 Championship. The girls played in this same Division in 2017 and didn't win a game. They competed in the weekend tournament and were undefeated. The girls defeated Greater Melbourne Volleyball Academy in the Final. GMVA is the Victorian Junior Elite program that streamlines players into the Junior National team and College scholarships. So it was a big deal for our school program to beat them. It was a good indication of our progress for the program over the past twelve months.

I would like to thank and acknowledge Mr De Salvo for his commitment and tremendous efforts in assisting our students to shine!  They are great ambassadors for our McKinnon community.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Lewis Sellenger (Year 7) and Kampi Nainhabo (Year 9) who both made centuries for their respective school cricket teams yesterday. This is a very rare occurrence for any cricketer let alone in a 20 over school game. What a wonderful achievement by both!

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Mr Andrew Hemsley who participated in the Melbourne marathon on the weekend. Andrew was representing the James Macready-Bryan Foundation. This organisation provides support and funding for young people with acquired brain injuries. Well done Andrew on your tremendous efforts!

TRAFFIC CONGESTION & SAFETY

Earlier this week a student riding his bike was injured by a car door opening.  McKinnon Road is obviously a very congested busy road and quite dangerous in wet weather.

Please be very careful when driving your son/daughter to school and park in designated spaces only! (I am sure our community sadly contributes more to the Glen Eira Council through traffic fines outside school than anybody else).

I think parking away from the school and asking your son/daughter to walk a few metres is good for them and will help ease the congestion.
