9C3 Challenge Day Activity

This term 9c3 have participated in Challenge Day each week. So far we have undertaken physical challenges at Brimbank Park, Ice Skating and Rock Climbing. We have learnt about different aspects of Melbourne with city tours and visits to the state library, the Shrine of Remembrance and old Melbourne Gaol. The class have also undertaken a group research project on a range of issues that may be found in the Melbourne CBD which involved surveying members of the public within the CBD. We are looking forward to more Challenge Day activities in term 4.

Author Talk

Last Friday on the 8th of September we had the pleasure of meeting the very talented author Melissa Keil. She had told us how she began writing along with her journey through the process of publishing her very own book. I found the talk really inspiring as listening to how passionate she was towards her books that she’s proudly written. It also taught me that starting writing from young can be very beneficial if you’re looking towards writing as a possible career. After the author talk I was very privileged in being chosen along with other students to take part in the writing workshop. In the writing workshop we learnt about character development were we were required to make up a character and answer relevant questions to help us get to know more about our character. This really helped me understand that knowing your character well helps the audience know them too, and that’s a really good writing tactic to know. Overall I enjoyed being companied by Melissa Keil and we thank her for coming and expressing all her knowledge on writing.

The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC)

On Thursday, July 27th, 147 students across the three campuses participated in the internationally recognised Australian Mathematics Competition. Of these, 9 students achieved a distinction (top 10%) and 37 achieved a credit (top 50%) which is an absolutely fantastic result.

This competition is run every year and is open to all students from grade 3 to year 12. The test is designed to be difficult and the students all showed great perseverance in completing it to the best of their abilities.

Special mentions to Ton, Nhan and Jonathan who performed best in their respective age groups and each of them will be presented with their certificates and prizes at the next assembly.

We’re looking forward to a high number of participants for next year as well.

The Art & Technology Expo

Year 8 students have visited the Art & Technology Expo to help them decide their electives for 2018. After an introduction from Mr De Castro, Students were able to take a close look at the products of year 9 classes including baked goods, robots and artworks. There was also a musical presentation performed by a group comprising singers, guitarists and keyboard players. This was an informative session that will assist students in making selections for year 9.

A Samoan Cultural Experience

Students at Kings Park were involved in a Samoan Cultural Experience. The cultural leaders spoke about the importance of being proud of who you are while also being willing to accept others for themselves. During this session, students were learnt some clapping patterns and traditional sounds and chants. Despite the noise in the gym, everyone had a chance to be involved in telling their story and leading the clapping.

This session was well received by everyone with students learning more about respecting one another and embracing the diversity that is the Kings Park Campus of Copperfield College.

Yr 10 Advance community Project

As a community project two students from the Yr 10 Advance class have formed a small partnership with the Sunshine RSL to help make Remembrance Day a more known and understood day. There will be poppies being sold at the front office in multiple sizes ranging from $1-$4, starting from the last week of term 3.
