Hand On Learning (HOLS)

After removing the never-ending cables and wires, seating and various other items from the tram, Hands on Learning students from our Sydenham and Kings Park campuses have been busy working on the next task. Recently, students  have been involved in the design, planning and construction of shelving and benches for the tram. Students have been exposed to the use of various new tools, techniques and developed new skills required to design and then construct projects from scratch. Our problem solving skills were put to the test when things didn’t turn out exactly to plan, but with persistence and perseverance, we overcame these problems and created awesome final products. We are looking forward to the sunshine and warmer weather that comes with Term 4 as we further develop the tram into a unique space for Hands on Learning and Copperfield College.

Chess News

On 22 August, a team of 15 Copperfield students (11 from Sydenham and 4 from Delahey) attended the Chess Victoria Secondary Zonal competition at Suzanne Cory High School. This was a massive event, with over a hundred players from schools across Melbourne competing to qualify for the Chess Victoria State Finals in October. All students played 7 gruelling games of chess, with a number of our players competing at the top tables during the day against players from schools including Xavier College, Westbourne Grammar and Penleigh & Essendon Grammar. When the dust settled, Copperfield placed equal fourth out of 10 schools present, a wonderful result. George (Year 12, Delahey) earned a Distinction and booked his place in the State Finals, joining Joshua (Year 9, Sydenham) and Ed Win (Year 10, Sydenham) who had both already qualified earlier in the year. Joshua also earned a Distinction, as well as a bronze medal in the Year 9-10 category, while Ed Win earned a Credit. In addition, Selin  (Year 8, Sydenham) qualified for the Secondary Girls State Final. Credit awards were also given to Rory (Year 9, Sydenham), Jackie  (Year 12, Delahey) and Stanley (Year 12, Delahey). Overall, it was a very successful tournament for Copperfield!

Many thanks to Mr Tan and Kellie Jasper for their assistance in organisation and transport and for supporting the students on the day. Thanks also to Joel's dad, Brad, for the great photography.

 Inroads Program launch

On Tuesday 12 September  8 senior students had the opportunity to attend the Inroads Program launch run by our community partners ABCN (Australian Business and Community Network).

Year 12 students Amina, Felicia, Tiffany, William,  Kianni,  Alisa, Hinereta and Brad attended the program launch which was held at the brand new PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) building in Southbank.

Students were given an engaging tour of the  PWC building which resulted in them being a little mind blown when it came to the technology they saw. Virtual reality, digital conferencing spaces,  rooftop spaces and in-house cafes and restaurants are part of the daily life of PWC staff.

Our students also had the opportunity to work with students from neighbouring colleges, working in small groups which they did exceptionally well establishing connections and demonstrating strong leadership, communication and teamwork skills.

The workshop was excellent, fast moving and inspiring leaving most of the students keen to take up the opportunities offered. The attending students will be contacted by Inroads and Talent Rise in October to establish connections and  help them to get access to a traineeship in Information Technology.
