International Students

Meet New Staff Members,

Hanh and Lee!

The International Student Program welcomes Hanh and Lee to our staff!

Hanh is our new Vietnamese speaking support  and has been working in the education field for almost 10 years throughout Vietnam, Malaysia and now in Australia.

I am thankful for being part of a dynamic school community. I look forward to supporting students with all aspects of their learning and wellbeing . We are here to  support you, provide information and offer advice anytime. Together we will help you become the best version of yourself!

Lee, with Cambodian-Chinese background, will play an important role in diversifying our international student cohort. Lee graduated university with a Bachelor of Law and has five-years' work experience with the Royal Government of Cambodia.

I decided to pursue my Master’s degree in Australia to broaden my opportunities. Having been an international student myself, I can bring my own experience to support young students on their educational journey.

Homestay thank you

The International Student Team recently hosted a homestay afternoon tea to thank homestay families for providing such good care for our international students.

Principal Ms Eva McMaster and Assistant Principal Ms Belinda McGee welcomed and thanked our lovely homestay hosts for playing an important role in the success of our international students.

This event not only revisited some very important homestay policies, but also provided a good opportunity for our hosts to share their experiences of being a homestay and discuss strategies to best assist students.

'Home Away From Home' Celebrations

On 24 November, we celebrated the last session of 'Home-away-from-home' with more than 20 international students at Westfield Doncaster.

On behalf of our school, Mrs Belinda McGee presented a token of appreciation to two of our volunteers, Mr and Mrs Yang, who have continued to give so much of their time and effort to support our International Student Program.

Reflections:

"I’m very happy that I participated in the Home-Away-from-Home Program which allowed me to make friends, enjoy nice food and play fun games. Although I’m in Year 11 and didn't have much free-time, I still came along and enjoyed the activities. Thanks to the organisers for helping me make lots of beautiful memories."

- Yu L (11H)

"Thank you to the following VIPs who gave us the opportunity to serve the International Students at DSC via the "Home Away From Home Program": Principal Ms Eva McMaster, Assistant Principal Ms Belinda McGee, Ms Sonja Allen and Ms Christine Allen of Westfield Shopping Centre. Special thanks to Ms Sally Huang, the International Student Coordinator and DSC staff Heidi and Mary for being so efficient and conscientious. We look forward to serving the students again in 2020 and we wish you a blessed Christmas and New year."

- Kok Weng Yang and Eileen Yang.

Senior School Award Winners

During Senior School Presentation Night, five international students received awards. These students are: Franchesca L (10A) for Academic Excellence, Jasmine C (11H) for Performing Arts, Silvia G (11D) for Personal Achievement, Jefferson J (11H) for Academic Excellence and Lisa Z (11C) for Academic Excellence.  Well done everyone!

Reflection by Lisa Z (11C):

Q; What awards did you receive at Senior School Presentation Night?

R: On presentation night, I received Academic Excellence awards for for Math Methods, Specialist Math, Chemistry and Physics.

Q: What is your reflection on getting these awards?

A: I was quite surprised to find out that I was eligible to attend Presentation Night. One year of hard work finally paid off. When the teacher announced my name, I stood on the stage and the spotlight shone upon me. I felt so thrilled and nervous that I couldn't even walk normally. It was definitely the best day of the year.

Q: Who assisted you during this award-winning journey?

A: As my first year here at DSC, I found it so overwhelming to do mainstream at the start of the year. Everything was brand new for me. However, I was lucky to have so many friends and teachers who were willing to help me out and who supported me during tough times. I couldn't have gotten the awards without their generous help.
