Tony Bones

Book Week Performance

On Tuesday 6 August, Year 7 students and some Year 8 students, enjoyed a performance for the lead up to Book Week by Tony Bones who brings picture books to life.

This brand new 40 minute stage performance brings the new Australian picture book TO LIFE! It is created and performed by Tony "Bones" Appleby, B.Ed, a qualified drama and dance teacher with over 20 years of professional school teaching and performing experience in children's theatre and theatre in education. Tony has been adapting and performing CBCA shortlisted books across Australia for Book Week since 2000 and this is his 35th Australian book adapted to the stage.

Here is what some of our students thought:

“It was a very entertaining show and it informed us about sustainability." Madi.

“This show was entertaining and informative about sustainability." Tristan.

“The show was really funny and entertaining and a great way to learn." Johnah.

“The show was a good chance to learn and a good way for kids to get interactive." Shayla.

“The show was a fun and intriguing way to promote sustainability.”

Year 8 History

Medieval Europe

Year 8 History students have been studying Medieval Europe. Last week the students learnt about how a Coat of Arms was used to identify knights on the battlefield. Each coat of arms was unique and records were kept by the College of Arms. Students were then able to design their own Coats of Arms. In medieval times only five colours and two metals could be used. Students were asked to apply these rules to their own designs with, of course, modern adaptations!

Studio Arts Scene

Year 12

On Tuesday 13 August our Year 12 Studio Arts students travelled to Monash University in Caulfield to participate in the “Going Public and Private” Education program. During gallery visits to both a Public University Art Museum (MUMA) and Private Collection (Ten Cubed) students met arts professionals and compared how these two types of organisations manage their collections and develop exhibitions. Students also examined methods used to display and promote contemporary art and were given the opportunity to see the storerooms at both galleries to find out how artworks are cared for behind the scenes.

The program not only provided the students with all the key knowledge they require for their Unit 4 studies but it also allowed them to leave the classroom and gain some real world experience of the art industry.

Science in Primary Programs

Over the past fortnight, St John’s has hosted Grade 5 and 6 students from St Mary’s and St Paul the Apostle North Primary Schools. Both Primary Schools took the opportunity to use the Science facilities to complete hands-on exploration of concepts that were being studied in the classroom. St Mary’s focused on the properties of light, whilst St Paul the Apostle investigated matter and its various properties.

STEP Bike Education

Year 7

Throughout weeks five and six of Term three, our Year 7 STEP classes have undertaken a Bike Ed experience which links in with their exploration into Sustainability.

The students, along with their STEP teachers and Bike Ed staff, went through some training drills before venturing out along the Dandenong Creek bike trail, which they were familiar with from their MAD Day walk. They then spread out into groups and conducted a survey on types of rubbish found in the area.

This was a great opportunity for students to understand the impact of littering on the environment, as well as get to know each other better and gain some good exercise.
