Debrief

Reflection

Reflection is an important part of our learning. At the end of most lessons, students take time to reflect on what they have learnt, whether they have met the success criteria and achieved the learning intention and how they can continue to improve and extend their learning. This enables them to feel good about their learning and know what to do next.

Feedback

Feedback is one of the most powerful influences on learning and achievement. Teachers at Lockleys North make sure the feedback on students' work is connected to the learning intention and success criteria so that it is useful and assists students to have a growth mindset - understanding that they can get smarter and that making mistakes and keeping trying makes them stronger. This helps students to think "I can't do this yet, but if I keep trying and asking for help when needed I will get there.", rather than "I got this wrong. I'm stupid and I will never be able to do this." Giving students feedback on the effort, processes and strategies that they use has been found to make students wish to work harder and try new things. However, praising students' intelligence can make them feel good briefly, but can lead to students being more reluctant to try things they see as hard in case they make mistakes. Students give themselves feedback using the success criteria, give each other feedback and receive feed back from teachers.

Goal Setting

Goal setting motivates students and helps them to achieve, but all goals are not equal. At Lockleys North, we assist the children to create SMARTAR goals (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely, agreed upon and reviewed) as these are more effective in increasing learning. It is important for us to focus on issues over which the students have greater control, rather than goals which compare the student to others or rely on others' opinions, such as being the best at something or getting an A.
