Learning Intentions

LNPS has a priority to ensure that students are clear about what they need to learn. When students learn, a broad Learning Intention is displayed, so that students are clear about what is being learnt and assessed in that lesson. The success criteria for tasks breaks down and clarifies success into smaller steps, so that students can read, reflect and self assess, when working on tasks. The success criteria is co-constructed by the teacher and students. Students are encouraged to reflect on this when starting, working on and reflecting at the end of a lesson.

Teachers work with students and personalise learning by providing teaching points and feedback for the next step to improve learning while the students are working on that task.

Learning Intentions can start with one of these key phrases, they may include ‘To know how to’, ‘To understand’ and ‘To be able to’. They identify the knowledge, skills or understanding that students will focus on in that learning task. It is important that the knowledge, skills and understanding can be transferred across other learning areas. Learning Intentions are based on the Australian Curriculum, to ensure national consistency about the skills, knowledge and understanding that our students develop.

Target Time

Mellor students have targeted learning designed to cater for individual learning needs. Mellor teachers use data from individual students, to plan and develop Target Time groups. Workshops provide supportive, structured learning in small groups and target learning experiences to meet the group needs, in literacy.

Word study is held from Monday to Wednesday for 30 minutes. Students work on investigating and recognising spelling patterns, word meanings, dictionary skills, word bases and their history.

The second targeted learning area is Writer's Workshops. These are held on Thursday and Friday mornings. Students work in groups which include beginner writers, writers who are exploring and developing writing skills, writers that are expanding and extending skills in sentence fluency and writers that are refining Book Making skills.
