What's been happening!

CSEN MUSIC - By Darryl Thompson (Music Teacher)

Last week, thirty-two excited musicians and singers from Middle School donned their brand-new T-shirts, packed their instruments, stands and lunches into the bus and headed off for a day's rehearsals at Maranatha in Officer to prepare for the forthcoming CSEN Music event slated for the final week of Term 1. While subsequent public health developments have led to the cancellation of the final event, the first day of rehearsal was nevertheless a resounding success. Each participating school divided into Junior and Senior Bands and Choirs to learn pieces close to their ability. Most of our students found the day a significant challenge to which they rose with aplomb, much to their credit. In this, they really embodied our BHCS 2020 theme of The Courage to Grow. This gives the band a great kickstart to the year, so watch this space (subject to confirmation!). Thanks to Adam Messenger and Ashleigh Wilson for a great day out.

CSEN Chess Competition - By Jenny Simmons (Secondary Teacher)

Last week selected primary and secondary students participated in the CSEN Chess tournament, held here at school in the Restaurant. Students played 7 games each over the span of the day and the top individual players from each school were awarded medals. It was wonderful to be part of a lunchtime conversation that consisted of discussing various chess moves! Congratulations to all those who competed, and particularly to our secondary team who performed exceptionally well to come third in the competition.

Congratulations to our medal winners - Primary students Luke (Yr 6) and Alex (Yr 6), and our Secondary students Jacob (Yr 11), Jonathan (Yr 11), Josh (Yr 10), Robbie (Yr 9), Will (Yr 9) and Daniel (Yr 8).

BHCS Switch Program - By Allen Dickson ( Enrichment Co-ordinator)

As a part of the BHCS SWITCH Extension program, select Year 7 and 9 students attended Yarra Ranges Technical School (YRTS). The students had to apply to be a part of the experience; Year 7 students for a 'Design Sprint' about Public Transport of the Future, and Year 9 students for a Rooftop Farming simulation.

The 7 Switch group followed a Design Thinking Process of ideating what future public transport might be, then used 'Little Bits' to make autonomous cars, Thymio robots to follow a path, and 3D Printing to create individualised 'smart chip' Mykis.

The 9 Switch group played an Urban Farming simulation where they had to select crops, buy items needed to improve yield and then expand their 'rooftop farm' through various climatic conditions. This was a brand new design brief and the students loved having the ability to use their 'profits' to better resource their farm and trial new crops.

Restrictions permitting, applications for the next round of SWITCH design briefs will be in Term 2.
